About the OpportunityVelocity Risk is offering an exciting opportunity for full-time Underwriter II and Senior Underwriter roles, featuring a hybrid work arrangement of two days from home and three days in-office, based at one of our sites in Chicago, IL; Atlanta, GA; Nashville, TN; or Birmingham, AL.
Shared Responsibilities:
- Analyzing and underwriting a profitable book of business for Commercial Lines, including determining risk acceptability, setting pricing, and establishing underwriting guidelines
- Auditing underwriting files and accounts for process improvements
- Nurturing and developing positive relationships with agencies and producers in assigned territories, while strengthening existing partnerships
- Managing, training, and mentoring a team of Underwriters Is and Assistants
As a Commercial Underwriter II, you are responsible for analyzing and underwriting business for Commercial Lines to meet Combined Ratio and capital metric goals.
Underwriter II Specific Responsibilities:
- Assisting the Senior Underwriter team with a variety of responsibilities
- Achieving business unit objectives through quality decision-making and strict adherence to underwriting practices
- Collaborating and partnering with the larger Commercial Lines team and across departments to enhance and improve Velocity Risk's products and services
As a Senior Underwriter, you are responsible for building a large book of business as well as coaching and mentoring underwriters and underwriting assistants.
Senior Underwriter Specific Responsibilities:
- Serving as a front-line manager for Velocity, overseeing various operational aspects
- Assisting the Head of MMB in managing the underwriting functions within MMB
- Collaborating with business units like Claims, Compliance, and Operations to prioritize projects and implement efficiencies for optimal underwriting and business performance
- Proactively coaching and engaging a team of Underwriters and Underwriting Assistants, enhancing their daily performance and skillset
- Partnering with department AVP’s and the Head of MMB to develop and suggest improvements for underwriting frameworks and product offerings
To qualify for the Underwriter II role, you must have a minimum of 3 years of Commercial Insurance experience with Bachelor’s degree (Risk Management or similar) or equivalent industry experience.
To qualify for the Senior Underwriter position, candidates need a minimum of 5 years of experience in Commercial Insurance, coupled with prior management and leadership experience, along with a Bachelor's degree or equivalent industry experience. You embody competence, demonstrating the ability to make sound decisions under pressure in areas encompassing both underwriting and personnel management.
Shared Qualifications and Attributes:
- Possession of professional insurance designations (asset)
- Experience in disaster insurance (asset)
- Strong foundational knowledge of underwriting best practices and strategies
- Deep understanding of insurance processes, including claims and Broker of Record changes
- Comprehensive awareness of the intermediary role, ensuring effective broker-client interactions
- Familiarity with underwriting software
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Willingness to take a hands-on approach and actively assist in various tasks
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, exceeding personal duties to support team members
- Proven experience in leading, training, and guiding others
- Exceptional skill in building strong, impactful relationships with stakeholders, both internally and externally
