What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tax Accountant position at Verano?
The Tax Accountant is responsible for assisting the Tax Manager in the preparation, filing, coordination, and payment of federal and state income tax, sales tax, use tax, tax research, and compliance. The Tax Accountant will also support additional filings to ensure our financial reporting team has all necessary documentation prior to reporting deadlines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare monthly and quarterly sales and cannabis tax filings across 15 states.
- Management and dispute of tax notices, additional tax assessments, and penalties and interest through communication with federal and state taxing authorities.
- Preparation of personal property tax returns and analysis of asset classes and useful lives.
- Preparation and management of Forms W-9 across all entities.
- State sales tax exemption research, management, and form preparation for all cultivation facilities.
- Assist in addressing requests from auditors, tax preparers, provision prepares, banks, and other third parties using accounting and ERP software.
- Assist in the coordination and preparation of annual 1099 filings.
- Preparation of other tax forms as needed.
- Conduct technical research and documentation as needed.
- Assist on domestic income tax audits as needed.
- Support tax planning, M&A, and special projects as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, taxation, or finance.
- Ability to work with a team.
- Comfortability working with third parties.
- Strong self-review skills.
- Excellent listening skills and the ability to learn quickly.
- Strong problem-solving and time management skills.
- Highly organized and detail oriented.
- Comfortable with a fast-paced environment and flexible to daily changes.
- Must have strong organizational and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 year of tax accounting experience with a publicly traded company or public accounting firm is preferred.
- Public or corporate accounting is preferred.
- Experienced in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with tax complexities in the cannabis industry is a plus, but not necessary.
- CPA or other recognized certifications are a plus, but not necessary.
