Job Description Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking to hire a Director, Patient Educator - US Heme to join our growing team. This person will report to the to the US Heme Head of Marketing and is responsible for developing and coaching a team of field Patient Educators that will provide people living and affected by sickle cell disease (SCD) and beta thalassemia (BT) with education, tools, and resources that helps them have meaningful discussions with their healthcare providers. This team may also provide information about Vertex products. The Director, and team of Patient Educators, will contribute to the U.S. local market strategy, and coordinate/ execute the patient/caregiver tactical plan. They will ensure that the team provides a best-in-class educational experience. This individual will act as a champion for their team and the sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia communities while adhering to all Vertex policies, and legal/regulatory guidelines. This individual will have a strong passion for supporting empowerment among patients, their families, and caregivers and helping them successfully navigate and engage within complex healthcare landscapes. They will thrive in an environment of rapid change; demonstrate strong and inspiring communication; work effectively across multiple cross-functional teams; and have a patient-first, problem-solving, and analytical mindset. The successful candidate will have the courage to ask, “how might we?” and “why?” and an ability to successfully challenge the status quo to provide innovative and compliant solutions to complex healthcare challenges. Key Responsibilities Successfully lead, develop, and coach field Patient Educator team members. Actively participate in the recruitment and hiring activities and decisions for team and provide ongoing professional development of direct reports. Co-develop and execute the commercial brand strategy and tactical plan in coordination with Marketing and Advocacy teams, among others. Participate in territory/division/regional account planning and provides input into local market decisions and resource needs. Upon product approval, team will provide patients and caregivers with approved product resources using approved materials. Maintain consistently high team performance and achievement of team and individual objectives while ensuring compliance with all Vertex, legal, and regulatory guidelines and policies. Foster teamwork and coordination with other functions that results in an exceptional educational experience. Provide insights that inform marketing team strategies and development of patient marketing materials that address patient and Vertex objectives. Model and act as a catalyst of Vertex policies and values Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or greater required Minimum of 10 years of work experience in a clinical setting, conducting healthcare education, patient education, social services and/or biotech/pharmaceutical industry, and 3 years of supervisory/management experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience Rare disorder and/or transplant center experience or knowledge preferred. Demonstrated ability to develop deep and effective working rapport and compliant consultative relationship with patients and caregivers, as well as internal teams Strong and inspiring written communication skills, presentation delivery, cross-functional collaboration, and interpersonal skills to be effective in a team environment. Demonstrated organizational and project management skills A solid compliance mindset and demonstrated integrity on the job Ability to travel up to 70% of the time Highly competent in a multitude of IT capabilities to support the business needs Company Information Vertex is a global biotechnology company that invests in scientific innovation.
