Title: Sterilizer Technician (Traveling)
Location:
- Winchester, VA: Field service position with travel between Winchester, Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, and Woodbridge, VA.
Pay Rate: $36–$38/hour
Relocation: Open to relocation of candidates.
We are preferably seeking a US Veteran, Guardsman, Reservist and/or Military Spouse for a Sterilizer Technician (Traveling) position. The Sterilizer Technician specializes in maintaining and repairing sterilization and decontamination equipment, including steam sterilizers, vaporized peroxide sterilizers, washer decontaminators, cart washers, internal and standalone steam generators, ultrasonic cleaners, perioperative scope sterilizers, and all supporting systems. A 2 year degree in a technical/electronics field or equivalent experience, 3 years experience in the repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and installation of medical sterilization and decontamination equipment, and a valid driver’s license are required.
As a Sterilizer Technician (Traveling), you will be responsible for installing, inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, and verifying the performance of advanced sterilization systems. You will ensure compliance with regulatory standards, assist with inventory management, and provide technical advice to colleagues. The position requires familiarity with a wide range of clinical equipment and may involve maintenance outside the sterilization specialty. The ideal candidate should be flexible and available for travel as needed.
Responsibilities
Technical Service (40%)
- Perform scheduled maintenance, performance assurance (PA) inspections, and operational verification procedures (OVP) on complex sterilization and decontamination systems.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate medical sterilization equipment, including steam generators and pneumatic systems.
- Communicate repair status, unusual equipment issues, and customer concerns to supervisors.
- Coordinate with and oversee subcontractors, vendors, and service technicians to ensure high-quality service delivery.
- Stay current with industry practices through ongoing training and professional development.
Regulatory Compliance (25%)
- Maintain accurate equipment databases, including service schedules, inventory records, and service history.
- Ensure adherence to the Medical Equipment Management Plan (MEMP) and all regulatory agency requirements.
- Complete all documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
Account Relationship Management (25%)
- Build strong relationships with customers, serving as their primary contact for technical expertise.
- Discuss equipment functionality and status with customers in a professional manner.
- Act as an ambassador for the company, upholding its mission, vision, and values in every interaction.
Inventory Management (10%)
- Perform periodic inventory inspections to ensure common failure parts are readily available.
- Conduct security analyses for new customer equipment and verify inventory accuracy.
- Perform Incoming Inspections (II) for rental, loaner, trial, and permanent equipment.
Skills and Experience
- US Military Veteran, Guardsman, Reservist, and/or Military spouse preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in the repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and installation of medical sterilization and decontamination equipment required.
- Valid driver’s license required; variable travel requirements depending on primary site or region that may require use of personal vehicle.
- Proficiency in AC/DC electrical systems with the ability to read wiring diagrams and schematics required.
- Strong plumbing knowledge, including the ability to read piping diagrams and identify components required.
- Experience troubleshooting electrical motor circuits, steam generators, and pneumatic systems required.
- Ability to sweat copper pipe and create flare/swage connections.
- Skilled in using digital multimeters, amp meters, and performing pressure and temperature calibrations.
- Knowledge of sterilization cycles (gravity, pre-vacuum, liquid), biological indicators, and the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) workflow.
- Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills.
Education and Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in a technical/electronics field or equivalent experience required.
- Certification programs may waive degree requirements.
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as bending, crouching, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lbs. during equipment servicing.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel) and networking applications required.
