Sterile Processing Technician (1-Year Contract with Potential 2-Year Extension)
Job Overview:
We are seeking qualified Sterile Processing Technicians for a 1-year contract, with the possibility of a 2-year extension. The ideal candidates will possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to ensure proper sterilization and disinfection of surgical instruments and medical equipment. This role is essential to maintaining patient safety by preventing infections through aseptic processing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure aseptic practices are followed to prevent infection spread.
- Apply knowledge of microbiology and sterilization techniques using methods like steam autoclaving and chemical sterilization (Sterrad).
- Conduct biological and chemical tests to confirm sterilization efficacy, including interpreting results of Bowie-Dick tests and biological vials.
- Operate and maintain sterilization and high-level disinfection (HLD) systems like Medivator Advantage and Trophon, ensuring routine testing and quality assurance.
- Assemble, disassemble, clean, and maintain surgical instruments and medical equipment, including specialty instruments in areas such as orthopedics, gynecology, and ophthalmology.
- Identify damaged or malfunctioning instruments and arrange for replacements.
- Ensure proper reprocessing of flexible endoscopes (e.g., colonoscopes, gastroscopes) per manufacturer instructions.
- Adhere to detailed reprocessing procedures for various Reusable Medical Equipment (RME).
- Perform physical tasks including prolonged standing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, and pushing carts.
- Work in environments with varying temperatures, noise levels, and while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
- Maintain flexibility in daily tasks and be capable of shifting priorities as needed.
Qualifications:
Candidates must meet one or more of the following qualifications:
- Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM/HSPA).
- Graduation from a recognized CRCST training program with at least 2 years of experience.
- Graduation from an accredited Operating Room Technician training program with 2 years of Sterile Processing experience.
- U.S. military-trained Surgical Technicians with at least 2 years of experience in Sterile Processing Services.
- VA Level 2 certification with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a Sterile Processing Services environment.
- Non-certified technicians with at least 5 years of documented, hands-on Sterile Processing experience.
Skills and Experience:
- Expertise in aseptic techniques, microbiology, and sterilization processes.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, surgical procedures, and anatomy.
- Familiarity with a wide range of surgical instruments and equipment, including laparoscopic, orthopedic, and gynecological tools.
- Physical ability to handle the demands of the job, including standing for long periods, lifting heavy objects, and working in noisy, hot, and humid conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow strict, step-by-step instructions.
