This Associate Producer pitches and pursues character driven stories, breaking news pursuits, door knocks in the field, while developing relationships with publicists, attorneys, companies, and various figures in the news. This Associate Producer works on late news coverage, ensuring that the booking team is staying competitive on developing targets in the afternoon and into the night on a wide variety of beats including breaking news, entertainment, features, consumer, business, politics, international, and medical news.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter and flags up evolving stories in real time to upgrade coverage. This position requires sound, unbiased news judgement, persistence, as well as a detailed understanding of TV newsgathering. This person must have the ability to optimally communicate internally across show teams and platforms including Stations, as well as externally with guests and contacts.
Applicants must be willing to work Sunday through Thursday, 3pm to 12am.
Skills / Experience
- 2 years producing experience in a professional newsroom / field is required.
- Degree or equivalent experience in broadcast journalism or related field is preferred.
- Must have proven news judgment and experience chasing breaking news.
- Basic understanding of the broadcast newsgathering process is required.
- Candidate should watch CBS News programming as well as the competition and know what makes a good booking for every story.
- Strong research skills are required, including working with public and private records databases such as Lexis Nexis and searching social media.
- Not afraid to make phone calls.
- Experience supporting newsgathering teams in the field using solid news judgment and leadership skills is required.
- Thrives in fast paced and time-critical situations.
- Must be an excellent writer with well-developed oral communication skills, especially when working on sensitive stories.
- Must be able to balance and prioritize multiple stories with different deadlines : short, medium, and long-term.
- Must be able to manage ongoing relationships with external contributors, news outlets and other collaborators.
- Must be willing and able to work occasional overnight and / or weekend shifts.
- Must have a valid US passport with unrestricted ability to travel domestically and internationally.
- Must have a valid US driver’s license and unrestricted ability to drive.
