What are the responsibilities and job description for the VDC Preconstruction Engineer, Mechanical & Plumbing position at VIATechnik?

The role:
As a VDC Preconstruction Engineer, you will collaborate with operational managers and sales managers to assess projects from prospective clients. This includes understanding the technical needs of projects; estimating hours, resources, and timelines; and acting as a technical subject matter expert for prospective clients and sales managers. Additionally, you will support the operational team by ensuring a seamless transition between sales and execution of the project. You will work closely with the operational managers and project managers in executing the intended scope and ensuring work is executed in alignment to discussions during the preconstruction stage.
In this role you will:
- Work closely with the sales team as a technical VDC subject matter expert, with a focus on mechanical and piping systems.
- Engage in technical conversations with prospective clients pertaining to BIM, VDC, and fabrication.
- Work with estimators to estimate projects, timelines, hours, and costs.
- Work with operational teams to capture project performance metrics for future pricing insights.
- Execute and manage prospective projects, ensuring information through sales and estimation phases is documented within company standards and workflow requirements.
- Provide subject matter expert knowledge in early-stage client conversations, particularly revolving around BIM, VDC, fabrication, constructability, installation logistics, schedules and timelines, as well as items specific to mechanical sheet metal, plumbing, and piping systems.
- Support the aggregation of project and performance data for analytics and insight purposes.
- Support compiling project briefs and start-up information gathered in the sales process for successful hand offs to operational teams.
- Educate, train, and support the estimating and sales team on work performed and provide technical insights on projects.
- Identify risks and potential challenges on projects during the initial review process.
- Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, BIM/VDC requirements, schedules, and other requirements provided in the bid process. This includes developing estimates and proposals of services that correlate to the requirements of the project.
- Work closely with the project team periodically to ensure projects are operationally executed in alignment with original scope intent.
Apply if you have:
- A bachelor's or master's degree in architecture, engineering, or a similar discipline.
- 3 years of experience providing implementation, training, and support in BIM and VDC.
- 3 years of experience working for a plumbing and/or mechanical trade contractor.
- Experience in combining and coordinating BIM updates, running clash detection on revised components, and communicating results to internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience modeling, drafting, producing drawings, and reading mechanical and plumbing plans.
- Capability to work effectively in a self-directed way within an extremely fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
- The ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects requiring frequent communication, organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.
- Aptitude for reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and contracts.
- A proactive and flexible attitude and a willingness to take an "all hands on deck" approach.
- Ability to work some early and/or late hours to coordinate with project teams in other countries.
Even better if you have:
- Field construction experience.
- Experience leading online meetings and training sessions across remote project teams using platforms such as ClickUp.
- Been involved in the administrative side of projects: invoicing, budgeting, scheduling, and forecasting.
- Knowledge of fabrication processes in piping and sheet metal systems.
- An understanding of other primary building systems: foundations, primary building structure and walls, electrical, fire protection, specialty systems, conveying systems, and the interior finishes and the sequence of assembly of each.
- Experience managing BIM and VDC across a project lifecycle.
- An understanding of real world constructability of modeled systems.
- A portfolio of work you can share.
- Proven track record of effectively working with and managing teams remotely.
- A background in providing professional services to clients.
- Experience with software such as AutoCAD MEP and/or Fabrication CADMEP.
Compensation and featured benefits:
- The pay for this position is $90,000 - $110,000, and the role is eligible for bonuses. The actual salary offer may be different as we carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, location, and experience
