Summary
The Instrumentation and Controls Technician will support plant operations by performing maintenance and repair of all plant field instrumentation and control equipment. The Instrumentation and Controls Technician will perform skilled work requiring a high degree of precision and understanding of technical data and systems. This is a full-time, non-exempt position. The Instrumentation and Controls Technician must be willing to become a Bargaining Unit Member of the IBEW Local 614. This position reports to the IC&E Supervisor and is located in Philadelphia, PA.
Responsibilities
Provide maintenance support to troubleshoot, calibrate, and maintain all instrumentation associated with the boilers, steam line, and all auxiliary equipment for the plant.
Maintain equipment used to control the operation of boilers, chillers, compressors, pumps, and other plant equipment and systems.
Perform periodic cleaning, inspection, testing, repairing, and calibration of electrical, electronic, and pneumatic control systems. Typical equipment serviced includes. temperature and pressure instruments, gages, flow transmitters, switches, solenoids, and control valves.
Perform repairs and modifications to control circuitry. Install and program electronic instruments. Install sensing elements, wiring, tubing and fittings. Clean and repair electrical power switching equipment.
Test, analyze, and troubleshoot electrical power supply circuits.
Install, maintain, and calibrate computerized controls and instruments and programmable controllers.
Install, calibrate, test, troubleshoot, and maintain protective relays, computers, metering, monitoring, and control systems on boilers, steam line, and plant auxiliary equipment.
Reads and interprets electric generating plants P&ID's and CWD's to locate, identify, troubleshoot, and repair plant systems, interlocks, etc.
Uses test equipment (oscilloscopes, multi-meters electronic bridges, loop calibrators) and hand tools (i.e. drills, screwdrivers) as necessary to troubleshoot and maintain devices and systems for the power plant.
Completes all written and electronic records (i.e. work orders, calibration sheets, timecards, material requests) required to document the work in progress and as it is completed. Continually updates knowledge of plant systems and instrumentation.
Makes decisions about how best to repair equipment and what resources (tools, time equipment) will be needed.
Perform steam vault rounds, inspections, and maintenance.
Perform other duties and assignments as directed by plant management.
Employee may be required to work irregular or rotating shifts. Employee will be required to work overtime. Must be able to respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
Qualifications and Experience
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in electronics and pneumatics, and instrumentation.CEMS system maintenance and troubleshooting experience preferred.
PLC maintenance and troubleshooting experience preferred.
Ability to use basic math and geometry.
Intermediate level Computer skills including MS Word, Excel, Power Point, and CMMS systems.
Good mechanical aptitude.
General knowledge of Federal, State, and Company environmental regulations and compliance requirements, as well as follow site safety policies and procedures.
Ability to work in mentally stressful environments: must be able to react to crises where immediate action is required to correct or curtail potentially damaging or hazardous situations.
Work with and around hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work harmoniously in a team environment.
Strong communications skills – verbal and written. Able to prepare reports at request of management as required.
Knowledge of electricity, voltage, and current relationships.
Physical Requirements
This position is located in a Steam Boiler Plant environment. The Instrumentation and Controls Technician will work both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in accordance with heat stress procedures.
Ability to tolerate confined spaces, including manholes, and varying temperatures and weather conditions during each shift.
Ability to lift heavy equipment and carry materials up and down stairs with the capacity of lifting up to and including 90 pounds.
Ability to hear and understand audible alarms, detect changes in noise levels of rotating equipment and hear portable radio communication.
Ability to discern assorted colors.
Ability to climb stack ladders and tolerate heights up to and including 250 feet.
Employee may routinely be required to stand for extended periods of time and to walk over uneven surfaces such as loose rock, open grating and up and down ladders and staircases.
Work with and around hazardous and non-hazardous materials (reference the waste management guidance manual).
Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required i.e.…steel-toed boots, respirators, goggles, safety glasses etc.
Ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment (e.g. forklift, mobile crane, etc.) and maintain operating licenses and certifications. Valid state driver’s license is required to drive company vehicle.
