Machinist – Shipyard Machine Shop

Location : Vicksburg, MS

Job Type : Full-time

Job Summary :

We are seeking a skilled Machinist to join our Shipyard Machine Shop . The machinist will be responsible for operating manual and CNC machine tools to manufacture, repair, and modify metal components for vessels, marine equipment, and boat systems. This position plays a critical role in supporting boatbuilding, vessel maintenance, and repair operations by producing precision-machined parts that meet industry standards.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Precision Machining & Repair :

Operate lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders to fabricate, modify, and repair boat components.

  • Perform custom machining on shafts, bearings, bushings, propeller components, hydraulic parts, and other boat-related parts.
  • Set up and adjust machine tools, workpieces, and tooling for optimal precision.
  • Blueprint & Spec Interpretation :
  • Read and interpret engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and boat repair manuals to ensure accurate machining.

  • Work with tight tolerances and perform quality control checks using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other precision measurement tools .
  • Material Handling & Inspection :
  • Work with marine-grade materials , including stainless steel, bronze, aluminum, and carbon steel.

  • Perform inspections on machined components to ensure they meet required specifications before installation or delivery.
  • Identify and resolve defects or inconsistencies in machined parts.
  • Collaboration & Safety Compliance :
  • Work closely with welders, fabricators, mechanics, and engineers to support vessel maintenance and new boat construction projects.

  • Follow all safety protocols, PPE requirements, and OSHA / boatyard regulations to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-maintained machine shop workspace.
  • Qualifications & Skills :

  • Experience :
  • 3 years of experience as a machinist in a boatyard, industrial, or heavy manufacturing setting .

  • Background in marine repair or boat component machining is highly desirable.
  • Technical Skills :
  • Proficient in operating lathes, milling machines, boring mills, and other machining equipment .

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, and technical specifications .
  • Skilled in using measuring instruments , including micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators.
  • Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, shaft alignments, and marine propulsion components is a plus.
  • Physical Requirements :
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

  • Comfortable working in a Shipyard environment , including exposure to noise, dust, grease, and fluctuating temperatures.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks .
  • Certifications (Preferred but Not Required) :
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Safety Certification

  • Forklift or overhead crane operation certification
  • Shipyard Competent Person (SCP) Certification (preferred)
