Description
Incumbent serves as Program Director for the Vigo County Home for Children, responsible for coordinating, implementing, and supervising residential living and school related issues.
Example of Duties
- Supervises assigned staff, including interviewing candidates and making hiring recommendations, providing orientation, planning, delegating, and controlling work assignments, establishing specific work goals, evaluating job performances, recommending promotions, transfers, or demotions, and maintaining discipline and recommending corrective actions as warranted.
- Evaluates daily progress of each resident, including ensuring best available educational program, and developing educational and recreational goals. Submits monthly treatment reports.
- Evaluates appropriateness of current programming, including developing on-going alternative programming.
- Intervenes and resolves resident conflict, and enforces established disciplinary measures for residents. Provides crisis counseling.
- Serves as liaison with various entities, including, but not limited to, school officials, Welfare Caseworkers, Probation Officers, and parents/guardians.
- Transports residents to various appointments, including school and court. Attends school functions, field trips, extracurricular activities, and coordinates major summer trips.
- Coordinates house scheduling, and maintains health standards in living quarters. Maintains resident accounts and banking.
- Maintains files and filing system.
- Coordinates Title I Summer Program and Title I tutoring program during school year, and completes and submits payroll for Title I teachers.
- Promotes positive public relations, including speaking to community groups.
- Maintains regular contact with teachers and school administrators regarding issues or concerns pertaining to residents. Supports and enforces school personnel decisions and policy.
- Performs administrative duties in absence of Executive Director.
- Testifies in Court and school hearings, including attending all school conferences and school hearings. Attends seminars, workshops, and conferences.
- Serves on 24-hour call for emergencies.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Baccalaureate degree in social work, counseling, psychology, human services, or related field, with three (3) to five (5) years experience in agency work, child advocacy, administration, or other relevant work experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Ability to meet all employer and department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Working knowledge of standard office policies and procedures and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks and operations.
- Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare personnel evaluations, various documents, memorandums, correspondence, and detailed reports as required.
- Working knowledge of an ability to comprehend and correctly use a variety of informational documents and reference book such as, policy manuals, school handbooks, COA Standards, Indiana juvenile Code book, and first aid manuals.
- Knowledge of and ability to learn and understand counseling and “street sling” terminology, language, principles, and techniques, and ability to expound on knowledge of topics related to child counseling.
- Knowledge of basic filing systems and ability to create and maintain accurate and complete Department files/records.

- Possession of a valid driver’s license and a demonstrated safe driving record.
