Description
Under Supervision of the Program Director, the part-time Youth Care Specialist strives to fulfill the parental role for residents under live-in conditions and works toward the resolution of behavioral and emotional problems of residents. Additionally, this position serves as a treatment team member carrying out the agreed upon treatment plan goals effectively.

Example of Duties

  • Supervises residents; advises and counsels residents; serves as a treatment team member; provides tutoring to residents; intervenes and redirects residents, as needed; remains aware of each resident problems.
  • Enforces Group Home rules and procedures; acts within the limits of established discipline policy; reports serious problems to the administrator.
  • Attends weekly staff meetings and meetings called by Treatment Director; arranges meetings with staff and children to resolve treatment issues.
  • Adheres to 24-hour work schedules; responsible for housekeeping duties.
  • Maintains various records including daily logs, medication logs, mileage logs, clothing lists, and personal files.
  • Educates residents on emergency procedures; conducts fire drills. Distributes allowances to residents.
  • Works/interacts in conjunction with Central Office for ordering, storing, food/supplies. Monitors employment of residents.
  • Coordinates and participates in daily recreational and exercise activities.
  • Stores medicines and toxic materials properly. Serves as liaison between parents and children.
  • Ability to maintain personal composure and tactfully handle difficult situations and interpret questions correctly. Ability to behave in a friendly, understanding, helpful, and professional manner with residents, coworkers, supervisors and the general public.
  • Ability to supervise, counsel and mediate; ability to persuade, convince, influence and train others; ability to advise and interpret on the application of policies, procedures and standards to specific situations;
  • Ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well established policies, procedures and standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with immediate supervisor, school officials, support staff, medical professionals, law enforcement personnel, counselors/therapist, residents and their family members, and the general public verbally and in writing; ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and well-modulated voice.
  • Performs other duties assigned.

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or GED, supplemented by previous experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.
Special Requirements
First-aid, CPR, and Universal Precautions certification, nutrition education, and State required annual continuing education/training of 20 hours is required. Valid driver's license. Pass background checks.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to operate a variety of automated office machines including computer, calculator, copier, telephone system, fax machine, etc; ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment; ability to operate motor vehicles; ability to use and utilizes cleaning/maintenance materials.
  • Ability to exert physical effort in sedentary to light work involving routine stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching; tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
  • Ability to participate in physical recreational activities and exercise programs.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication
  • Ability to comprehend and correctly use a variety of informational documents, reports, and records.
  • Ability to comprehend a variety of reference books and manuals including policy manuals, school handbooks, and first-aid manuals.
  • Ability to prepare resident files, recreation sheets, information petitions, chore charts, memorandum, correspondence, and other job related documents using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style.
  • Ability to accurately record and deliver information, meet deadlines, and maintain confidentiality of restricted information.
  • Ability to make independent judgments, use common sense, and utilize the principles of influence and rational systems in the performance of tasks.
  • Ability to learn and understand counseling terminology, language, principles, and techniques, ability to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions, to respond immediately to crisis situations, and to balance priorities within and between offices/departments and agencies.
  • Ability to maintain personal composure and tactfully handle difficult situations and interpret questions correctly; ability to behave in an understanding, helpful, and professional manner.
Environmental Adaptability
  • Ability to work effectively in a residential home environment, ability to protect self and others in situations that may include violence, toxic agents/chemicals, diseases, etc.
  • Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
  • Ability to physically protect self and others in crisis situations and highly emotional situations.
