Supervises: All full-time and/or part-time DPW Employees
Salary: Non-Exempt Position starting hourly pay: $23.50 - $24, depending on experience. Some Overtime is required during the winter season.

Position Overview: The Superintendent of Public Works will oversee a wide range of public works operations, including street maintenance, snow removal, and general infrastructure projects. This position requires a highly motivated individual who takes pride in maintaining and beautifying our village while leading a team of skilled workers to accomplish important tasks. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills and a commitment to enhancing community services through effective public works initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Manage day-to-day operations of the Department of Public Works.
- Supervise, train, and lead a team of public works employees, ensuring productivity, quality, and safety.
- Oversee street and infrastructure maintenance, repair projects, and snow removal operations.
- Work to beautify the village through landscaping, tree planting, and general upkeep of public spaces.
- Ensure all work complies with safety regulations and quality standards.
- Operate heavy equipment for snow removal, street maintenance, and other tasks.
- Maintain public works vehicles and equipment, including performing repairs and troubleshooting when necessary.
- Keep inventory of all equipment, tools, and materials.
- Keep ledgers on each piece of equipment that itemizes repairs and costs on the equipment – time and material.
- Compile all necessary reports – to include – time sheets, material usage reports, equipment usage reports, M203 Highway Condition Report – monthly DPW Report to Village Council.
- Collaborate with village leadership to plan and execute ongoing infrastructure projects.
- Attend Committee and Council meetings as requested.
- Attend training seminars and workshops – keep up-to-date on State requirements including CDL training, MDOT regulations.
- In cases of emergency such as fire, weather or other emergencies or disasters, coordinate matters pertaining to the emergency to ensure that the Village streets and other Village properties are maintained and the situation managed or mitigated to the best of your ability. If the DPW Superintendent is not available because of vacation, sick time or personal time, ensure that other DPW employees will be available to take over this responsibility.
Requirements:
- A valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is required.
- Hands-on experience operating and maintaining heavy equipment, such as loaders, plows, graders and other maintenance machinery.
- Mechanical experience is required, including the ability to perform basic repairs and troubleshooting of equipment.
- Experience in managerial and snow removal operations within a public works environment is a plus.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to lead by example and foster a collaborative, team-oriented work environment.
- A genuine pride in maintaining and beautifying public spaces.
- Ability to work well with others, including village employees, contractors, and the public.
- Some mechanics, cement, carpentry, electrical, painting, and welding experience a plus.
- Prior experience in a municipal or public works department is a plus but not required.
