BACKGROUND
The Village of Fox Lake (population 10,978) is located 55 miles northwest of downtown Chicago and 20 miles west of Waukegan, Illinois. Fox Lake is located in Lake and McHenry counties. The Village is located on the South Shore of Pistakee Lake, Nippersink Lake, and Fox Lake, three connected water bodies that form part of the Chain O’Lakes system. The Village of Fox Lake has a total area of 9.942 square miles of which around 20% is water.
The Village of Fox Lake is seeking interested applicants for the position of Maintenance Worker I. A
Maintenance Worker I is responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance activities in the construction, repair, cleaning and maintenance of Village streets, landscape, forestry, traffic control devices and related facilities and systems. This position also performs snow and ice control operations and assists the Parks and Recreation Department with special events. Specific work assignments are provided on a daily basis and may be rotated.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as an illustration of the various types of

1) Operates various types of equipment and, based on assignment, performs a variety of tasks in maintenance, operation, repair and construction of roads, sidewalks, curbs, sewer systems, stormwater drainage systems and other similar facilities. As appropriate, keeps records of work performed, project specific time and materials used for billing or future work planning.
2) Perform concrete work, such as framing, pouring and finishing sidewalks, curbs, drives, and lighting foundations.
3) Complete electrical work such as installation and repair of street lighting and building electrical work.

4) Complete asphalt paving, grinding, prepping, and paving.
5) Operate construction equipment in a safe manner such as front end loader, bobcat, backhoe, and five-yard dump trucks.
6) Operates a wide variety of equipment and vehicles of various classifications as qualified and assigned including dump trucks, tractors, vacuum sewer cleaning machines, mowers, loaders, generators, chipper, pumps, crack sealer, backhoe and other equipment; operates various hand and power tools.
7) Performs snow and ice control duties, drives dump truck with snow plow and salt spreader, and assists in emergencies such as flood and wind or rain storms.
8) Forms, pours and finishes concrete sidewalks and curbs; performs road maintenance and repair tasks, including mixing and pouring cement, asphalt repair and replacement, patching potholes and cracks, sidewalks and curbs; cleans and repairs storm sewer inlets, catch basins, crossovers and outlets.
9) Performs various semi-skilled building maintenance, repairs and construction tasks including painting, plumbing, carpentry, masonry and electrical work.
10) Cleans, sweeps, washes and performs maintenance and repair tasks in public buildings and facilities.
11) Performs landscaping activities, including mowing grass, seeding, fertilizing, sweeping, pesticide application, raking grounds, planting and trimming trees and shrubs, and general gardening; performs landscaping repairs to restore and replenish topsoil; rakes, grades and seeds the area as required.
12) Performs environmental services, collection of brush, bagged leaves and other debris; grinds brush and prepares compost material.
13) Straightens, repairs and replaces street and traffic signs; participates in the driving of sign posts and erection of signs.
14) Performs facility, park and right-of-way maintenance, including trash removal and trashcan installation and maintenance, tree planting, pruning and removal, sign installation and maintenance, and path, sidewalk and parking lot maintenance.
15) Cleans and makes minor repairs to tools and equipment, including lubricating equipment and sharpening tools.
16) Completes snow removal operations, including plowing, shoveling, and salting Village roadways, parking lots, and sidewalks.

17) Prepares, preps, set up and take down of Village events, parades, and celebrations.
18) Completes weekly refuse removal at Village Parks, bike paths, and in the downtown area.
19) Complies with all safety procedures and policies of the Village.
20) Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
A High School diploma or equivalent is required. Supplemental technical training or specialized shop courses is desirable. Possession of a valid Class “B” or higher Commercial Driver’s License
(CDL) with air brake endorsement must be obtained within six (6) months of hire. Candidates must have considerable experience performing maintenance, construction, restoration or repair work or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Depending on the area of assignment, this position may require possession of a Flagger’s
Certification, State of Illinois Pesticide Public Applicator’s License, Arborist Certification and certification of traffic control operations. A thorough background investigation, including personal and professional references and criminal background will be conducted prior to offer of employment. Candidates must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug/alcohol screen following a conditional offer of employment.

A candidate for this position should have thorough knowledge of the following:
1) Materials, methods and practices used in all phases of building construction.
2) Common hand tools, materials and standard equipment used in maintenance, repair and construction work.
3) Practices, methods and materials used in maintenance, repair and construction of public streets, stormwater facilities and buildings.
4) Safety precautions and hazards of the work.
Skill in:
1) Operation of tools and equipment used by the position.

2) Working with mechanical equipment, electricity, plumbing, carpentry, construction and landscaping.
3) Operation of a truck with snow plow and other de-icing equipment.
And ability to:
1) Perform manual labor for extended periods of time, in all weather conditions.
2) Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
3) Lead a work crew, if required.
4) Learn a broad range of operational skills.
5) Maintain a positive attitude and professional demeanor when dealing with the public.
6) Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Village employees and members of the public.
7) Organize, prioritize and carry out office work with minimal supervision and in a timely manner.
8) Safely operate a motor vehicle.
