Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Weights and Measures, is seeking an individual to serve as a part-time Weights and Measures Farm Scale for the Southwest Virginia territory. Duties include inspection and testing of farm scales; enforcing the Virginia Weights and Measures Laws and related regulations; testing, inspecting, and determining the accuracy of weighing devices used commercially in Virginia. This position requires occasional overnight travel. The selected individual must reside or be willing to relocate within a reasonable distance of the assigned territory and must be able to meet the physical demands of the position.
This position is paid on an hourly basis; is limited to working 1500 hours per year beginning each May; and does not include benefits.
Minimum Qualifications
Basic knowledge of inspection and enforcement procedures as related to the petroleum, supermarket or scales industries (either sales or service). Must be able to record and report facts accurately; understand, interpret and apply laws and regulations; to follow instructions and work independently; and must have excellent customer service skills along with exceptional communication skills, both oral and written. Demonstrated ability to operate assigned equipment proficiently and safely, have basic mechanical and mathematical skills. This position is physically demanding, and applicants must have the ability to lift and carry up to 100 lbs. (two 50-pound test weights) at times in addition to bending as needed, distinguishing colors, exhibiting manual dexterity, and working outdoors in various weather conditions. Must have (or be eligible for) and maintain a valid driver’s license, have a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety. H.S. Diploma/GED required.
Additional Considerations
Experience in enforcement, inspection, or investigative activities in a regulatory environment such as weights and measures are highly desirable. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
