Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a self-motivated individual to become a member of our Quality Management team with the Office of Laboratory Services. This position works with the Quality Management team in broad scope oversight, implementation and maintenance of the Quality Assurance (QA) program for the VDACS Regional Animal Health Laboratory System so that it complies with ISO 17025 and WOAH QA requirements for accreditation. This includes the system policies and procedures, individual laboratory standard operating procedures, laboratory quality assurance inspections and audits, and compliance with implementation milestones. Serves as on-site specific QA resource for 2 regional animal health laboratories (RAHLs) by providing expert technical assistance, training and consultation. Performs select equipment verifications. Conducts auditing of laboratories for quality assurance. Serves as liaison regarding QA issues with System Quality Manager, central office administrative personnel, RAHL staff, and the general public. This position will be based at either the Lynchburg RAHL or Wytheville RAHL, with weekly daytime travel to the assigned non-based RAHL and other RAHLS as needed. State car is available for travel between assigned RAHLs. Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth’s telework policy.
Minimum Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of a variety of complex microbiology and laboratory procedures and basic audit and inspection processes and procedures. Strong computer proficiency to include administration of a complex laboratory information management system and MS Office Suite. Sound analytical skills, good customer service and oral/written communication skills are needed as well as the ability to independently interact with a variety of individuals and to positively influence and guide them. Must have demonstrated initiative, ability to multi-task, organize projects, and work under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to properly use basic laboratory equipment. Proven ability to write, follow and document technical instructions and regulations with precision and accuracy; to develop logical conclusions; and to work collaboratively within a team environment. Must have (or be eligible for) and maintain a valid driver’s license and have a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety. HS Diploma/GED required.
Additional Considerations
A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of medical technology, chemistry, biological science, or related subject. Current or recent experience in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory and knowledge of ISO17025 guidelines.
