This position is Wage (no benefits); up to 29 hours per week.
The Dept of Environmental Quality, Northern Regional Office (NRO) seeks a candidate to support its mission to protect and enhance the waters of the Commonwealth by collecting water samples and field data for the Ambient Water Quality Monitoring program (AWQM) for the region. To provide coordination of regional monitoring efforts, as applicable, for the Chesapeake Bay Program (CBP), High Frequency Bacteria (HFB), Biological, Probabilistic, Lake, Coastal, Wetlands, Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), Implementation, Pollution Response and Prevention (PReP), Fish Kill, Fish Tissue, Hazardous Algae Blooms (HABs) and Special Water Quality Studies. Responsible for ensuring accordance with established Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This effort is to provide datasets to inform water quality management decisions and 305(b) and 303(d) reporting requirements which engage the processes of detecting, identifying, defining, and remediating the water quality problems in the region.

Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of aquatic ecology, environmental science or equivalent experience
- Knowledge and/or experience in Environmental field sampling procedures and methods
- Knowledge and/or experience with field Instruments
- QA/QC of water quality data and procedures
- Verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently
- Proficient with personal computer use
- Knowledgeable in the operations and maintenance of small to mid-size water craft
- This position may require you to operate a state owned or leased vehicle. Therefore, a valid driver's license is required.
- Must obtain a Virginia DWR boat operator safety training certificate and/or meet the licensing requirements in accordance with the Code of Virginia.
- The ability to regularly perform strenuous physical activity to include heavy lifting (up to 50 LBS) and wading in streams
- This position works outside all year and must be able to tolerate extreme heat and cold.
- This position is in the field (out of the office) 80% of their time.
