Job Duties

Special Education Teachers are responsible for providing quality instructions and to meet the individual needs of the students in the areas of Adult Basic Education and GED. Additionally, to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth's statutes and program certification requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university in a relevant educational field, preferably a major or minor in special education.

Experience teaching children with special needs is required.

Demonstrated ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching of all the five subjects and supervise students; the ability to maintain accurate records; the ability to facilitate other instructors. Must possess working knowledge of all facets of the basic special education field, adult literacy and computer software appropriate for program needs. Experience in maintaining classroom, equipment and inventories; Demonstrate competency in the relevant field of current licensure.

License in 'special education' is required. Must possess a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License from the Virginia Department of Education with an endorsement in Special Education or qualify for reciprocity from another state and without deficiencies. Please note you are responsible for any renewal points to maintain a teaching license under the guidelines of Virginia Department of Education to comply with the requirements for your continued employment in this position. Additional Considerations

Master's degree preferably a major or minor in Special Education.

Experience teaching children with special needs. Experience in a correctional or alternative education setting. Knowledge and experience of DOC institutional policies and procedures and policy and procedures governing special education. Knowledge and experience in correctional education classroom management. Ability to supervise students with special needs and inmate aide. Knowledge of the DOC institutional policies and procedures and procedures governing special education.
