RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists the Advanced Heart Failure providers and/or registered nurse with patients in the office, including (but not limited to) the following tasks:
- Clinical Chart Preparation.
- Obtains the chief complaint or reason for the visit.
- Obtains vital signs accurately and efficiently to include blood pressure, pulse rate, height, and weight.
- Performs ECGs as indicated.
- Reviews current medication list and allergies, and updates as needed.
- Updates past medical, social, and family history.
- Updates review of systems as needed.
- Is part of the Advanced Heart Failure care team and pools.
- Helps to review in-basket pool messages and handles within their scope.
- Contacts patients for appointments and follow up as needed.
- Helps with order management to ensure any recommended testing is being completed as ordered.
- Enters and updates data in the EMR.
- Provides patient education when indicated.
- Notifies patients of test results per protocol and upon provider request.
- Provides a safe environment for patients and staff.
- Travel with the Advanced Heart Failure team to other Virginia Heart locations.
- Primarily responsible for rooming patients for either the Advanced Heart Failure doctor or APP when in office.
- Works as a resuscitative team member in emergency situations within their level of expertise and training.
- As assigned, routinely checks the emergency cart and equipment per protocol. The medical assistant is responsible for knowing the location of the medical supplies and medication on the emergency cart and the proper operation of emergency equipment within their scope.

- The Advanced Heart Failure Medical Assistant orientation is for two weeks. The orientation includes all the duties above.
- The Medical Assistant is expected to attend training sessions on new processes as they are implemented.
- Continuing education is not mandatory but is encouraged and expected.
- Opportunities for continuing education are ongoing and made available to clinical staff.
- Reports medical supply needs to the office manager. Maintains and cleans clinical equipment per manufacturer’s recommendations. Notifies office manager of equipment failures in a prompt manner.
- Expected to read, understand, and follow the Virginia Heart Employee Handbook, and follow the Clinical Policy and Procedures Manual, including updated policies when indicated.
- Demonstrates professionalism in all interactions with patients, providers, and fellow employees to create a positive experience.
- Adheres to the Virginia Heart dress code policy.

- Resolve issues appropriate to position. Maintains workstation and all clinical areas in a clean, tidy fashion.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Medical Assistant Certification preferred
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum of one year experience working in a medical office with both administrative and clinical experience preferred
- Computer literate
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Prior experience with the use of an Electronic Medical Record (EMR); preferably EPIC
- Strong interpersonal skills
