THE DIVISION
The Division of Virginia State Parks fulfills its mission "to conserve the natural, scenic, historic and cultural resources of the Commonwealth and provide recreational and educational opportunities consistent with the good stewardship of these lands, waters and facilities that leaves them unimpaired for future generations" by operating a system of 43 state parks that encompass over 75,000 acres; over 1200 buildings, almost 1700 campsites; over 300 cabins; over 700 miles of trails; nearly 500 miles of shoreline; 36 lakes and ponds; 11 swimming beaches; 4 international dark sky sites, and offers over 20,000 educational programs and workshops each year.
Managed by a full-time staff of 275 and a wage staff of 1000 during the prime season, Virginia's award-winning state park system boasts an incredible and diverse array of natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources including parks in the mountains, on the ocean, on the Chesapeake Bay, on 8 major rivers, on 4 major lakes, 4 rail trails, 3 battlefield sites, and 32 sites listed on the National Historic Registry. The Volunteer Program Coordinator is an administrative role that supports the operations of the Office of Community Engagement and Volunteerism, and the staff and volunteers of Virginia State Parks. This position works in an office setting at the State Parks Main Street Center in Richmond with occasional site visits during the year. Work may include occasional weekends or evenings. The Volunteer Program Manager position is part-time, not to exceed 1500 hours per year. This position is eligible for two days of telework per week but may be required to be in the office 4 days a week during peak season (May through August). Primary duties include running background checks, assisting volunteer coordinators and volunteers with use of the internal volunteer database, and working collaboratively with office staff to accomplish administrative goals and support field staff.
Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) Background Check Operation- Runs background checks for Virginia State Parks volunteers, corresponds with park staff and volunteers regarding background checks, and updates internal databases as needed. This component of the position must be carried out in person, at the secure terminal where background checks are run. This is imperative to ensure a swift turnaround time for individuals and groups who are new to volunteering in state parks, or who have an expired background check, as they must be run every two years. This component of the position requires special training and works with our Office of Public Safety and Law Enforcement.
Volunteer Coordinator Support- Providing onboarding assistance for new volunteer coordinators and assisting with virtual and occasional in-person trainings on background checks and database use.
Volunteer Benefits- This encompasses running benefits on a regular basis to distribute loyalty points to volunteers, as well as assisting with the mailing out volunteer polos and gear. Benefits include apparel and recognition at the park level, as well as loyalty points that volunteers can exchange for discounts on cabin stays and annual passes.
Office Administration- Attending bi-weekly meetings, team retreats and team building, organizing volunteer apparel and gear, assisting with trainings and special events as needed.
Other duties as assigned.

Wage / seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.
