Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley, is accepting applications for a nine-month Electrical Wiring faculty position beginning the fall 2025 semester. The incumbent is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in electrical trades courses, developing curriculum, and providing academic support to students. This role involves teaching both theoretical and practical aspects of electrical trades, ensuring students gain the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the industry.
In addition to teaching, all faculty members advise students, serve on college committees, and participate in other activities that support the mission of the college. Such activities may include, but are not limited to: institutional effectiveness activities, club sponsorship, student recruitment, course and program evaluation, community service, and mentoring new and part-time faculty. Faculty are expected to maintain currency in their teaching disciplines and in trends in community college education.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
5 years of current industry experience in electrical trades.
Required ability to develop and deliver course content for electrical trades programs, including lectures, labs, and hands-on training; assessing student performance through exams, projects, and practical assessment; maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, technologies, and best practices; collaborate with colleagues to develop and update curriculum to meet industry needs; provide academic advising and support to students, including career guidance; participate in departmental meetings, professional development, and continuous improvement initiatives; ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
An in-depth understanding of electrical theory, systems, and applications and familiarity with industry standards, codes, and regulations (e.g., NEC, OSHA). along with knowledge of modern teaching methods and educational technologies are essential. Required skills include proficiency in using electrical tools, equipment, and software, excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and implement effective curriculum and assessments.
Required abilities include engagement and motivating students from diverse backgrounds, capacity to stay current with industry trends and integrate them into teaching, strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and industry partners.
Additional Considerations
Associate's degree in Electrical Technology or a related discipline preferred.
Journeyman's or Master's Electrician License preferred.
Prior teaching experience in a community college or high school setting preferred.
Additional related field experience and industry certifications in other trades disciplines such as Plumbing, Construction, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning, and Industry Safety preferred.
Knowledge of modern teaching methods and educational technologies preferred.
Strong Instructional And Presentation Skills Preferred.
Operation of a State Vehicle No Supervises Employees No Required Travel
