Training & Outreach Safety Specialist
Anticipated Salary Range: $57,200-$61,000

The State Corporation Commission (SCC) seeks a Training & Outreach Safety Specialist to join the Division of Utility and Railroad Safety (URS), which administers safety programs involving underground utility damage prevention, jurisdictional natural gas and hazardous liquid pipeline facilities, and railroads. This full-time position requires early mornings, evenings, and weekends, as well as frequent day and occasional overnight travel. The SCC offers a flexible hybrid work schedule, on-the-job training, and professional development opportunities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Principal Safety Specialist to administer the Operation Lifesaver rail safety program throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Attend in-person outreach events and provide educational presentations
- Schedule and present in-person and virtual trainings and outreach
- Conduct voluntary and settlement damage prevention training, including reviewing data and maintaining industry partnerships
- Prepare, review, and edit social media posts, media releases, and educational materials
- Perform related work as required
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional experience providing training to adults or experience working with outreach programs
- A bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required with considerable related experience
- Knowledge of learning styles and cultural norms
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Exceptional presentation skills
- Detail-oriented and highly organized
- Ability to maintain effective, professional working relationships with SCC staff, industry personnel, and the general public
- Willingness to complete frequent day trips and occasional overnight travel to conduct training and outreach programs, both in classroom settings and in the field
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, and/or Photoshop is preferred
- Valid driver’s license and driving record sufficient to be issued a SCC vehicle is required
- Knowledge of utility damage prevention and railroad safety is a plus
- Bilingual in Spanish/English is a plus

Located in downtown Richmond, the State Corporation Commission (SCC) is an independent state agency with regulatory authority over public utilities, insurance, state-chartered financial institutions, investment securities, retail franchising, and utility and railroad safety, as well as serving as the state’s central filing office for businesses.
