Job Summary
The VP – Renewables and Storage is responsible for leading the overall operations, maintenance, construction and engineering performance for battery energy storage systems (BESS) and Solar power production across the growing Luminant fleet. The VP provides leadership and direction to 3 directors: Operations, Construction and Engineering, overarching leadership to a growing renewables team and managing external relationships across the industry. The VP is responsible for defining the evolving standard for the Renewables organization, promoting continuous improvement, ensuring the most innovative engineering and technology approaches and collaborating across multiple parties within Vistra.
Job Description
Key Accountabilities
•Oversee all operations and maintenance (O&M) for all BESS and Solar assets, including:
–Accountability for O&M and CapEx budgets to maintain assets
–Optimization of O&M approach and management of teams
–Development and refinement of growing team, including distributed workforce in some areas
–Mitigating generation (solar) and availability (BESS charge / discharge) losses to maximize revenue
•Oversee project delivery of new BESS and Solar assets, including:
–Construction (i.e., EPC) management, especially scopes and schedules (e.g., outage management)
–Construction timeliness, budget and successful commissioning
–Input to planning and development considerations to ensure efficient construction and future operations
•Promote a continuous improvement mindset as part of the Operational Performance Improvement (OPI) culture. Furthermore, drive the development of new approaches, standardization and optimization to set the standard for renewables as the industry and organization at Vistra grow
•Collaborate and develop relationships within the industry, such as: OEMs, EPCs, vendors, ISOs, experts, etc.
•Collaborate with the following internal groups:
–Power Optimization Center (POC), who operates and monitors many sites remotely, to ensure monitoring, dashboards and operations are optimal and in-sync
–Technology and digital analytics to ensure tools are value added and leveraged in the most optimal way, enabling Vistra to remain at the forefront (e.g., machine learning and AI analytics, new technologies, IT and cybersecurity)
–Commercial to ensure optimal margin is being captured and assets being utilized properly
–Construction engineering to maintain leading edge on processes, design and innovation
–Corporate Development to ensure planning and growth decisions properly factor in operations and construction considerations
–Fossil operations as some of shared resources will be located at fossil assets
Education, Experience & Skill Requirements
•10 years relevant experience (power generation operations, maintenance, engineering); renewable power and storage experience necessary
•Ability to look critically at a problem set, identify unique, innovative solutions and influence change, especially important in new environment
•Continuous improvement mindset and drive
•Strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills – to be applied across the organization and externally, including the ability to confidently and effectively manage scope and timelines as well as build relationships (e.g., with EPCs, OEMs, vendors, ISOs, etc.)
•Occasional long, irregular hours. This position requires periodic travel as much as 50%.
•Bachelor of Science in an accredited Engineering or Engineering Technology program; Electrical Systems/Engineering preferred
•Experience gained through college degree programs and/or certifications is applicable to above skills
•Previous experience with EPC contracts, responsible for the entire scope of the construction process.
