Pharmacy Operations and Compounding Technician
The Pharmacy Operations and Compounding Technician will play a major role in preparing sterile intravenous (IV) medications in a cleanroom environment, ensuring accuracy, safety, and adherence to all regulatory guidelines. The Pharmacy Operations and Compounding Technician will also assist with other tasks as needed under the direct supervision of the pharmacists that are associated with patient care and compounding medications. This role requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and knowledge of aseptic techniques. Working under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Operations and Compounding Technician plays a crucial role in maintaining safe and efficient pharmaceutical services. This position reports to the Pharmacy Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Aseptic Compounding:
- Accurately compound sterile IV medications, including antibiotics, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and other admixtures.
- Adhere to aseptic technique guidelines, including proper hand washing, gowning, and use of a laminar airflow hood.
- Gathering all required components for compounding medications and patient supplies
- Quality Control and Documentation:
- Perform visual inspection of compounded products for particulate matter, integrity, and correct labeling.
- Document compounding activities accurately, including lot numbers, expiration dates, and quantities.
- Maintain accurate and timely records for all compounded medications in accordance with facility and regulatory guidelines.
- Cleanroom Maintenance:
- Clean and maintain compounding and IV preparation areas, including laminar flow hoods and cleanrooms, following facility protocols.
- Assist with environmental monitoring and cleaning schedules to maintain a sterile work environment.
- Inventory Management:
- Monitor and manage inventory levels of compounding supplies and medications.
- Ensure proper storage of compounded medications and raw materials in accordance with guidelines.
- Assist with ordering and restocking of materials needed for IV compounding.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all state, federal, and local regulations, including USP <797> and <800> guidelines for sterile compounding.
- Follow safety protocols, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous medications.
- Report any errors, discrepancies, or safety concerns to the supervising pharmacist promptly.
- Patient Preparation / Information
- Assist the pharmacist with obtaining lab values
- Maintenance and monitoring of the compounding areas
- Assisting with preparing deliveries as needed
Qualifications:
- Educational Background:
- Required:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Good interactive skills with employees, supervisors, referral sources, and consumers
- Registered and in good standing as a pharmacy technician with the Alabama Board of Pharmacy
- Preferred
- National pharmacy technician certification
- Experience in health care environment
- Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of IV compounding experience or completion of a compounding technician training program
- Background in home infusion, hospital IV room, or specialty pharmacy preferred
- Skills:
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in aseptic technique and sterile compounding procedures Strong sterile compounding skills
- Familiarity with automated compounding devices and pharmacy dispensing software.
- Detail-oriented and organized with a commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to follow complex instructions precisely.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods, wear personal protective equipment, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Ability to work in a controlled environment with limited exposure to hazardous substances, following all safety protocols
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds. May be required to lift cases of IV fluids or enteral feedings
- Ability to wear latex – employee may come in contact with latex
- Ability to use computers and related equipment – employee may be required to enter data into a computer, prepare labels, etc.
Hours:
- 8-hour shifts Monday-Friday
- Benefits include insurance (medical, dental, and vision) and paid time off, 6 paid federal holidays.
