Job Summary:
A lead warehouse technician is responsible for the day-to-day operations of a cotton warehouse, including receiving, storing, breaking, and shipping bales of cotton. They play a key role in maintaining product quality, ensuring safety procedures, and facilitating the smooth flow of cotton within the facility. Lead warehouse technicians typically work in agricultural facilities, which may operate year-round and require extended hours during peak harvest seasons. The work environment can be noisy, and technicians should be prepared to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Additionally, they prioritize daily operations, oversee loading and unloading of trucks, and coordinate staffing schedules for lunch, housekeeping, and preventative maintenance.
Job Responsibilities:
- Manage daily warehouse activities, including the receipt, storage, and shipment of cotton bales.
- Learn and comply with Viterra’s operational policy guidelines surrounding permit required work.
- Write out permits to be approved by operations management.
- Preform daily brief with operations manager with reports of progress, EE involvement, Harm Reporting, issues, etc.
- Attend weekly commercial/operations meetings to help on business planning and facility insight and preparation.
- Provide contractors with proper training and monitor work while on site to ensure a safe and productive workplace for both Viterra and contractors.
- Lead facility trainings when necessary and conduct trainings in a professional and knowledgeable manner.
- Conduct morning tailgates and develop daily strategies for executing business.
- Operate and maintain warehouse equipment such as forklifts, floor sweepers, golf carts, and other material handling equipment.
- Regularly perform thorough housekeeping duties throughout the facility and grounds to mitigate debris, and other waste.
- Schedule and oversee regular maintenance checks and servicing of equipment to prevent breakdowns and ensure operational efficiency.
- Load bales of cotton onto trucks, and intermodal containers for transportation to customers; using a forklift with clamp attachment.
- Use scanners to manage inventory, breaking, and loading and unloading of trucks.
- Break orders for shipment using a pick list, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Follow safety protocols and procedures when handling equipment and cotton bales to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Comply with environmental regulations related to cotton handling and storage.
- Prioritize daily facility operations to meet location objectives.
- Provide oversight and guidance to warehouse technicians for effective and efficient operations.
- Direct and supervise the loading and unloading of trucks, and containers ensuring adherence to procedures.
- Coach and mentor warehouse techs to achieve location goals.
- Ensure location housekeeping meets company expectations and assist with hiring, training, and managing warehouse team performance.
- Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance.
- All other duties assigned by management.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2-3 years of experience in a lead role in a warehouse environment, preferably in the cotton industry.
- Knowledge of cotton handling equipment and machinery, or experience working in a cotton warehouse.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Physical fitness.
- Problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in record-keeping.
- Steel-toed or sturdy leather boots are required on the job site.
- Valid driver’s license and means of transportation to commute to/from work.
- Willingness to work overtime, irregular hours, including weekends, nights, and evenings, especially during peak harvest seasons.
Special Demands:
- Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and bend.
- Exposure to moderate noise within the work environment.
- Ability to frequently wear personal protective equipment correctly, including safety glasses, etc.
- Ability to climb stairs.
- Ability to work partially in an outdoor work environment, including various climates, weather conditions, and inclement weather, approximately 80% of the time.
- Ability to perform all job responsibilities with necessary special demands for up to 8 hours per day.
