Job Responsibilities :
HVAC Controls / Automation Technician specializes in the installation, programming, maintenance, and troubleshooting of control systems that manage heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment. This role integrates technical knowledge of HVAC systems with expertise in automation, enabling efficient and optimized climate control in residential, commercial, or industrial environments.
Installation :
Install control systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), thermostats, sensors, actuators, and building automation systems (BAS).
Wire control panels and connect them to HVAC equipment.
Programming and Configuration :
Program and calibrate controllers and BAS to ensure HVAC systems operate according to specifications.
Configure automation software for system efficiency and energy management.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance :
Diagnose and resolve issues with HVAC control systems, including communication errors, sensor malfunctions, and software bugs.
Perform preventive maintenance on control systems to avoid downtime.
Integration :
Connect HVAC systems to centralized building management systems (BMS) for monitoring and control.
Ensure compatibility with other building systems like lighting, security, and fire alarms.
Documentation and Reporting :
Maintain accurate records of system configurations, updates, and repairs.
Provide detailed reports to supervisors or clients on system performance and upgrades.
Customer Interaction :
Collaborate with building managers or clients to understand needs and provide solutions.
Train end-users on system operation and basic troubleshooting.
Skills and Qualifications
Technical Expertise :
Proficient in HVAC systems and components (e.g., chillers, air handlers, variable air volume systems).
Knowledge of control systems like Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Siemens, or Schneider Electric.
Familiarity with networking and communication protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks).
Problem-Solving :
Ability to diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and software issues.
Tools :
Skilled in using mustimeters, oscilloscopes, and programming tools for diagnostics.
