The Import/Export Compliance Specialist is responsible for managing the import and export processes to ensure compliance with U.S. and international custom laws, rules, regulations, and requirements. The Import/Export Compliance Specialist will work closely with customs authorities, brokers, freight forwarders, and internal teams to ensure that shipments are processed efficiently and within legal requirements.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Daily monitoring, resolution and communication of all imports and exports shipments to and from the US.
- Verify and review customs documentation and entry summaries. Cross checks all data in ACE.
- Resolves any discrepancies with customs, brokers and vendors.
- Monitor compliance according to the U.S Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
- Accurately classify using Harmonized System (HS) codes and determine applicable tariffs, duties, and taxes for international shipments.
- Works closely with customs brokers, shippers and internal teams to ensure shipments are processed accurately, with complete documentation and compliance.
- Working with internal and external legal counsel and expert consultants on trade compliance program development and initiatives.
- Provides internal training to staff involved in customs compliance.
- Updating and maintaining import compliance program manual and related documents and developing and implementing international trade compliance standard operating procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of import and export transactions, including supporting documents, to ensure compliance with legal requirements and company policies.
- Stay up to date on changing laws and regulations related to global trade and customs procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience/Skills Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, International Trade, Logistics, or related field.
- 5 years in Import/Export operations or Customs Compliance.
- Strong knowledge of customs regulations, import/export processes and international trade laws.
- Proficient in customs software and ERP systems like SAP & Oracle.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to problem-solve compliance issues and navigate complexities of international trade.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational and prioritization skills.
