Job description
YMCA Camp Winona is looking for applicants to work with our YMCA kids. Camp Counselors are responsible for achieving the goals and objectives of the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA by serving as mentor, guardian and protector of the children in the program with first emphasis being safety, then character development and fun.
Our counselors are positive role models who practice the YMCA character values (Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility) and perform all assigned duties with energy and enthusiasm.
Core Functions:
- Relationship Building – Engage in active listening with members in order to build relationships, understand individual’s goals and interests, and take the initiative to assist in the achievement of those goals.
- Customer Service Excellence – Provide excellent customer service and positive communication to all customers, including but not limited to, members, participants, guests, volunteers, and fellow employees, by listening first and responding to their needs in a safe and effective manner.
- Role Model– Model and encourage the development and practice of the YMCA character values (Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility), performing all assigned duties with energy and enthusiasm. Abide by all personnel policies and guidelines, follow all reasonable directives issued by leadership, and uphold rules, regulations and safety standards associated with the YMCA.
- Annual Support Campaign – Provide support for the annual campaign and other special events when possible and as directed.
- Risk Management – Remain familiar with risk management procedures in the YMCA facility, which include but are not limited to: swimming pool rules and procedures, current CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred, child abuse prevention, and understanding specific responsibilities during fire, hurricane, tornado, or other emergency situations.
Job Specific Functions:
- Work cooperatively with camp staff in planning and carrying out diverse program experiences.
- Promote good personal relationships, conduct and respect within his/her group and among all other participants, groups and staff.
- Assume leadership of the group of participants assigned to his/her charge. Mentor, plan, teach and uphold rules and safety standards associated with the YMCA.
- Prepare needed materials and supplies for each day’s activities and manage supplies within the framework of a budget.
- Take responsibility for the continuous cleanliness of the day camp areas and the safety of all equipment used in the program.
- Remain constantly alert for problems affecting the health and safety of all participants, report all safety and risk problems and assist in correcting any problems as they occur.
- Follow all established procedures for field trips, ensuring that all participants are continuously accounted for, safe, and returned to the YMCA at the end of the trip.
- Prepare health, behavioral, and incident reports (legibly and on the proper forms) as required, including health or safety issues concerning participants as they arrive for the program.
- Attend required training within the timeframes set forth in the position’s training plan.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical and/or Mental Requirements
- Ability to move up to 25 lbs. in the form of boxes of program supplies.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time while demonstrating physical stamina and agility to quickly reach a child or situation to prevent harm
- Visual abilities to see participants and staff to ensure their safety and well-being
- Auditory and verbal abilities to give, receive and follow general instructions to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants
Job Specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Talents
- Good judgment under pressure, with the ability to make timely and sound, informed decisions
- Genuine liking and concern for children of all ages
- Enthusiasm for and ability to perform physical activity – both indoor and outdoor – including but not limited to running, playing, swimming and other child-related activities
- Creativity in planning and generating age-appropriate activities
- Leadership skills in working with children, including the ability to handle difficult children and disciplinary situations, demonstrating self-control, compassion, understanding, problem solving and assertiveness to assure the safety of all participants
- Skills in sports, nature, arts & crafts and games are very helpful
- Ability to communicate instructions at age-appropriate levels
- Knowledge of personal limitations and using other resources for relief and assistance
Education: High School/Equivalent.
Experience: Previous childcare and/or summer camp experience preferred.
Criminal background check and drug screening required.
