WPHW is a non-profit organization that serves four federally recognized tribes located in five communities: the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Aroostook Band of Mi'kmaq, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point, and the Penobscot Nation. Wabanaki traditions, language, and culture guide our approach and describe the ways we live in harmony with each other and the land we collectively share. Services are available to community members living on and off-reservation across the state of Maine.
Position Summary:
Historically, women play a critical role in Wabanaki culture. Women are givers of life and are responsible for teaching children about culture and creating the norms of the society. This position will support the Maternal and Child Health Manager and programming focused on caregivers and children to help support a healthy community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Support
- Provide assistance and support to the Maternal and Child Health Manager
- Planning and Coordination of program development
- Support the department staff in their scheduled activities and tasks
- Maintain a daily schedule to ensure the operation and efficiency of the department
- Oversee and coordinate the planning and scheduling process
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships, strong written and verbal communication skills
- Assist in maintaining program budget and deliverables
Literacy & Love Program
- Assist in the development and identify program materials, including book lists, connections with Indigenous authors, and other learning materials to be included for dissemination to community
- Assist in procuring items in accordance with WPHW policies and procedures
- Determine audiences for Literacy & Love program
- Provide assistance, guidance and oversight on program development
- Connect with community partners to promote the programs
- Determine innovative ways to promote bonding and connections through literacy and learning
Early Childhood Health & Education
- Assist in the development of Early Childhood Health Program; work within communities to determine areas of needs and develop an action plan to address needs
- Help to seek funding opportunities to address needs in action plan
- Work with other WPHW programs to collaborate to ensure children Birth - 8 years have access to prevention services
- Assist to determine culturally based early education opportunities for Wabanaki children ages Birth-8 years
- Assist in the development of parenting groups and support networks
- Work collaboratively with tribal organizations and government on the promotion of early childhood education efforts
Women’s Health
- Assist in engaging women to support economic and social opportunity for growth
- Assist in determining health needs within Wabanaki communities and develop an action plan to address
- Assist in developing programs that promote and support perinatal health
- Assist in developing strategic priorities for division and determine possible funding mechanisms to support efforts
Oral Health
- Assist and support early childhood oral health efforts
- Work with tribal communities on oral health needs
- Work with the internal team to develop culturally based messages for social and traditional media channels
Other Duties
- Help ensure all program data are tracked, collected, and analyzed for evaluation efforts
- Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Experience Required:
- Associate’s degree, college diploma in public health, health, education, social work, or a related field AND two (2) years previous experience OR
- Four (4) years of experience in public health, health, education, youth-serving profession, or a related field
- Experience working in Tribal Communities
- Experience working with Maternal and Child Health populations
Skills and Qualifications Required:
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- The ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently
- A strong work ethic and enthusiasm
- Candidate must be willing to travel with some overnights for trainings and events.
- A current driver’s license, a good driving record, and access to reliable transportation are required.
- Must pass criminal background check.
