Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, Wabash Valley Power is a not-for-profit electric cooperative and wholesale provider of reliable, affordable electricity to our 23 electric distribution member cooperatives. Job Description

We are seeking an Electric Utility Engineer with expertise in the integration of distributed generation systems and policy development. The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of electric distribution system operations, utility rate structures, and the operational challenges of integrating distributed energy resources into the grid. The role requires a professional who can balance autonomy and teamwork, with excellent communication skills for writing and reviewing policies related to distributed energy resource interconnections and operations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support and analysis for the integration of seamless distributed generation into electric distribution systems. Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations regarding distributed generation.
  • Assess utility rate structures and their impact on the adoption and integration of both flexible loads and distributed generation. Develop and explain rate analysis, when appropriate.
  • Apply technical knowledge of electric distribution system design and operation in the interconnection process.
  • Understand the role and operations of RTOs and their effect on distributed energy resource policies and practices. Monitor RTO policies and ensure alignment with cooperative utility policies.
  • Write, review, and update policies and technical guidelines for the interconnection of distributed energy resources into the electric grid.
  • Provide technical guidance on distributed energy resources and flexible loads to internal teams, member cooperative staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of strategies for increasing the integration of distributed energy resources and flexible loads.
  • Develop analysis tools, write reports, create presentations, and provide training on distributed energy resource policies and systems.
  • Remain abreast of industry trends as well as best practices for distributed resource integration.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or 5 years of experience in the electric utility industry, with a focus on distribution systems.
  • Experience with distributed energy resource technologies and interconnection processes.
  • Strong background in distributed energy resource integration, electric distribution system design, and utility rate structures.
  • Understanding of how RTOs operate and influence regional grid management.
  • Familiarity with AI and its potential utilization for enhancing resource integration into the grid.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively on complex projects.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Experience with energy efficiency applications within both residential and commercial applications preferred.
