What are the responsibilities and job description for the Middle School/Upper School Choir & Drama Teacher position at Wakefield School?
Wakefield School, located in The Plains, Virginia, is potentially seeking a dynamic and innovative teacher who loves working with young people, to serve as a member of its faculty beginning in August of 2025. This full-time position, which includes benefits, may include Middle School and/or Upper School classes in Choir and Drama to include history, performance skills, and theatre production, and advising 8-10 students at one grade level. In addition, this position includes teaching, producing, coaching, and directing a minimum of two large productions as well as project entries for VTA, VHSL play competitions, and Music in the Parks. The ideal candidate would have independent school teaching experience, a degree in a relevant field, and be committed to ongoing professional development.

Primary Responsibilities
- Embrace and model a culture of innovation and evolution in curriculum and instruction.
- Authentically engage with students embracing the unique culture of Wakefield School.
- Serve as an advisor and advocate for students including academic and personal growth needs of assigned advisees.
- Serve as an engaged faculty member collaborating with others in setting the professional practices and curriculum for the school.
- Create and maintain the rehearsal and production calendar in collaboration with the Tehcnical Director and division heads.
- Support and direct one Middle School choir and one Upper School choir.
- Plan for school concerts, productions, festivals and competitions for both Drama and Choir groups.
Qualifications and Experience
- A bachelor’s degree with a major concentration in a relevant field and/or education is required.
The preferred candidate will have:
- Master’s degree and/or Commonwealth of Virginia certification;
- Relevant classroom experience;
- Completion of a state-approved teacher preparation program in Theatre Arts (or Career Switcher Program in Theatre Arts);
- Technological proficiency in the classroom, including Google Educational apps, interactive whiteboards, and electronic grade books;
- Growth mindset and willingness to pursue ongoing professional development;
- Experience with coaching and/or club sponsorship;
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
