Reporting to the Chief External Affairs Officer, and serving on the Senior Management Team, the Vice President of Advancement will play a key leadership role both internally and externally, developing and implementing Advancement goals, strategies and initiatives for public, private, corporate, and individual funding sources, managing advancement staff and volunteers, and working closely with the leadership team and Board to achieve the Advancement financial goals while maintaining a personal portfolio of major individual donors and funders.
The VP of Advancement will have both operational and direct fundraising expertise and an ability to understand a highly dynamic organization. This position will work closely with the Senior Team and Board and effectively communicate the organization’s vision and mission into fundraising initiatives.
Summary of position: The Vice President of Advancement oversees all Walker fundraising activities and sits on the Senior Leadership team. The Vice President oversees the advancement staff and reports to the Chief External Affairs Officer.
Education & Licensure
Required: Bachelor’s degree in related field with related work experience.
Preferred: Master’s degree or related work experience in non-profits and a demonstrated history of fundraising success with major gift programs.
Experience/Qualifications
- Ten or more years of progressively responsible fundraising and management experience with an emphasis on individual giving.
- Successful experience with planning, developing, implementing and maintaining, comprehensive fundraising programs & campaigns, preferably within an independent school, social services or advocacy setting.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational and verbal and written communication skills; a professional demeanor and a proven track record in establishing and nurturing long-term relationships with Board members, donors and community leaders.
- Knowledge of corporate and community leaders and philanthropists.
- Demonstrated commitment to all aspects of diversity.
- Knowledge in managing and using Raiser’s Edge a plus.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop goals and strategy, and implement plans for a comprehensive fundraising program, including the annual fund, major gifts, corporate relations, public grants, foundation grants, special events, and donor relations
- Continue the expansion of Walker’s advancement programs and provide strategic direction for long-term fundraising capacity and provide hands-on involvement in a full range of fundraising activities
- Manage a portfolio of top donors and prospects, assertively initiating and maintaining a high level of interaction with and stewardship of Board and Committee Members and corporate, foundation, and major individual funders and prospects
- Work closely with the Chief External Affairs Officer, senior leaders, program directors, and potential funders to develop fundraising initiatives and priorities
- Work closely with the Advancement Committee (comprised of Board Members) to achieve the organization’s fundraising and friend-raising goals.
- Work closely with the Governance Committee (comprised of Board Members) to assist in developing a Board candidate pipeline.
- Oversee the Advancement staff including the Senior Directors of Advancement (Corporate Partnerships, Individual and major Gifts, and Foundation Relations).
- Develop and manage the measurement of progress toward objectives, as well as budgets, and proactively optimize or re-direct approaches as needed
- Serve as key member of the Senior Leadership Team
