Salary: All Probationary Patrolman start at $61,160 per year for the first year. Probationary Officers receive full pay while attending the 16-week basic session at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy at the Probationary pay grade.

Lateral Transfers: Physical Agility and Written Exam will not be required for Lateral Transfers who are currently enrolled in the Indiana Police and Fire 1977 Fund. Years of service, over three years, will transfer over and apply to Longevity Pay. During your one year probation, you will start out at Patrolman Salary and immediately get assigned a take home car. You will also receive vacation time equivlenant to years of service listed below.

Vacations: Employees shall be entitled to paid vacation as follows:

  • One (1) year but less than six (6) years - 2 weeks paid vacation
  • Six (6) years but less than sixteen (16) years - 3 weeks paid vacation
  • Sixteen (16) years and over - 4 weeks paid vacation

Personal Time Off: After one year of employment, an officer receives 72 hours of personal time off, to be used as needed, throughout the year.

Overtime: Overtime earned will be reimbursed to the police officer either in money or compensatory time off from duty at the rate of one and one-half (1 1/2) times the actual overtime earned by the officer.

Clothing Allowance: When a new officer is hired, the Town will furnish the officer with a clothing allowance for the purchase, maintenance, and replacement of uniform and equipment. This allowance is paid in one installment per year, or the officer may purchase the equipment through an approved uniform shop as needed throughout the year.

Insurance: A number of different insurance plans covering hospitalization, dental and visual are available through the Town of Walkerton, such as PPO and Health Savings Account (HSA).

Pension: Any full-time police officer hired after May 1, 1977, must participate in the Public Employee's Retirement Fund created in 1977 and administered by the State of Indiana. Each employee must contribute 6% of a first-class patrolman's salary. If the officer terminates prior to twenty (20) years of service, except for death or disability, contributions plus interest will be refunded.

Specialty Pay : Specialty pay is available for Crash Investigator, Crime Scene Tech, Evidence Custodian, Field Training Officer, and Canine Officer. Additionally, shift differential pay is given to 2nd and 3rd shift Officers.

Longevity Pay : Longevity pay begins after 3 years of service, at $250/year, and reaches its maximum at 17 years of service, totaling $3,750.00.

Walkerton Police Department Hiring Process

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizen
  • Must be 21-40 years of age at time of hire
  • Have a high school diploma or GED* certificate
  • Have no convictions of a felony criminal violation
  • Have no conviction of domestic violence or a domestic violence-related offense, either misdemeanor or felony
  • Must be of good moral character
  • Have no previous use of hallucinogenic drugs (LSD, Mushrooms, Mescaline, Ecstasy, etc.)
  • Possess a valid driver's license from current state of residence
  • Have an Honorable discharge from the military (if applicable)
  • Must pass mandatory drug screening
  • Have uncorrected vision at least 20/100 in both eyes, or be a long-term successful user of soft contact lenses correctable to 20/30 (must also be free from color blindness)
  • Must be able to pass a physical agility assessment test
  • Must be able to pass a competitive written exam and aptitude test
  • Must submit to in-depth background investigation; polygraph, psychological testing and medical examination
  • Must agree to and sign an employment contract post job offer

Written Exam / Entrance Test

The written exam is typically a standardized test used to assess general aptitude and does not require or assume any knowledge specific to law enforcement. Written exams typically test an applicant’s

Physical Fitness Assessment Test

Based upon the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy’s physical fitness standards to graduate from the Police Academy. The standards are the same for males and females.

  • Applicants must meet the standard for eachexercise to pass the assessment test.
  • This is a PASS/FAIL test only. No points are assigned for results.
  • Vertical Jump Test (Standard – 16 inches or greater)
  • Timed Sit Up Test (Standard – 29 in one minute or less)
  • 300 Meter Run (Standard – complete in 71 seconds or less)
  • Push Up Test (Standard – complete 25 push-ups with no time limit)
  • 1.5 Mile Run (Standard – complete in 16:28 or less)
