Job Overview
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Shelter Attendant to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for animal welfare and the ability to provide excellent care for animals in our shelter. As a Shelter Attendant, you will play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of the animals while also assisting visitors and potential adopters.
Duties
- Provide daily care for shelter animals, including cleaning, feeding, grooming, and exercising.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of animal housing areas, ensuring a safe environment for both animals and staff.
- Assist with animal handling and walking.
- Monitor the health and behavior of animals, reporting any concerns to staff or management.
- Facilitate interactions between potential adopters and animals, providing information on pet care and adoption processes.
- Support training efforts for dogs to enhance their adoptability through basic obedience commands and attending training classes off campus.
- Collaborate with team members to implement enrichment activities that promote the physical and mental well-being of shelter animals while participating in programming and adoption events.
- Provide excellent customer service to visitors, answering questions and guiding them through the shelter experience.
Requirements
- Experience in animal handling or pet care is preferred; knowledge of veterinary assistant practices is a plus.
- Familiarity with or experience in dog training is an advantage.
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and restraining animals when necessary and walking.
- A compassionate attitude towards animals and a commitment to their welfare.
- Previous experience as a veterinary technician or in a kennel setting is beneficial but not required.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays as needed.
- Familiarity with or experience with social media, data entry, outlook and teams.
- Reliable transportation and valid NYS driver's license are required.
- Strong communication skills, ability to work with public and volunteers.
