This is an as-needed position, and hours will vary based on the operational needs of the library. This position requires availability for evening and Saturday shifts. Flexibility in scheduling is essential to meet the operational needs of the library.GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: Performs responsible skilled clerical work in the public library including a variety of duties such as assisting patrons with various services, assisting with circulation procedures, processing holds, handling overdue functions, preparing materials to be shelved and ensuring a safe and pleasant environment for library users and staff all under the supervision of the Library Technicians and Library Director. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS: Performs circulation duties; checks books, magazine, videos and other materials in and out of library; responsible for the shelving, sorting, and organizing of library materials, as well as maintaining the cleanliness and order of the library. The position supports library staff by assisting with various tasks related to the management of library collections and helping patrons locate materials; performs related work as required. Operating circulation desk; checking books, magazines, videos and other materials in and out of library; responding to questions from patrons; assisting library patrons.(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. Responds to questions from patrons.Provides patrons with computer assistance.Uses automated library system to perform functions.Assists with library programming and basic reference services.Organizes books and material for return to shelves; examines condition and sets aside ones requiring mending and repair; sorts by number for shelving; performs shelving to ensure proper and consistent order.Performs faxing, scanning, and copying services.Conduct shelf reading to ensure that materials are in the correct order.Maintain the general cleanliness and order of library areas, including straightening bookshelves, tables, and public areas.Works at circulation desk checking materials in and out of library; enters data into computer system.Responds to inquiries concerning library programs, policies, procedures, hours, etc.Assists with research, cataloguing or other services and programs as assigned.Assists patrons with locating library materials.Performs faxing, scanning, and copying services.Checks NC Cardinal for pending loans.Orders requested books on NC Cardinal and maintaining inter-library loan files.Enters inter-library loan data into computer system; prints out inter-library loan requests; enters book reserves, holds and loans into computer system.Assist patrons with the use of public computers, digital resources, and other library technologies.Offer reader’s advisory services by recommending books and resources based on patron interests.Performs related tasks as required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Some knowledge of library routine and procedures; some knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; ability to follow established procedures and to perform work requiring some detail; skill in the use of office and data entry equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, and patrons. Requires attention to detail and the ability to assist patrons in a tactful and courteous manner both in person and on the telephone.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. High school diploma or GEDPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.Requires sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and lifting/moving books and carts up to 20 pounds.This is a physical job that involves repetitive tasks such as shelving books, retrieving items, and ensuring library materials are properly arranged and accessible.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work nights and weekends and a continual floating schedule as needed.
