What are the responsibilities and job description for the Customer Service Assistant (Howland) position at Warren-Trumbull County Public Library?
The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library is currently seeking to fill a Part-Time Customer Service Assistant position to join our team at the Howland Library location and contribute to our mission of promoting literacy, lifelong learning, and community engagement. As a Part-Time Customer Service Assistant, you will play a vital role in delivering exceptional service to our customers. You will assist library visitors with their information needs, help them access resources, and create a positive and welcoming atmosphere within the library.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Participates in routine public service by circulating materials to customers, which includes checking materials in and out, placing holds, registering borrowers, collecting fines and fees.
- Provides basic reference and reader’s advisory service to customers of all ages.
- Assists in branch operations - opens and closes the circulation desk and/or building, counts money and balances cash register, plans and sets up displays and/or bulletin boards, sorts and shelves materials, reads shelves, etc.
- Performs clerical tasks related to processing Search Ohio and other ILL’s to include searching lists, checking in, and labeling materials.
- Answers the telephone, responds to inquiries and directs calls, uses public address system (in locations where applicable).
- Attends to public use photocopiers – adds paper, assists customers with machine problems, contacts supervisor regarding service needs.
- Assists users with public computers and online catalog terminals. Troubleshoots minor hardware/software issues; opens help desk tickets and elevates calls for technical service as appropriate.
- Able to assist customers with downloading electronic resources onto a variety of devices.
- Provides users with general information about library services, directing them to other departments or Branch libraries as appropriate.
- Applies library policies to be consistent with circulation procedures in public service situations.
- Assists Youth Services Librarian with signups for story time and other programs; processes reading logs and incentives for reading programs.
- Handles returned mail. Mails appropriate policy forms with library cards. Enters customer registration data into computer. Maintains application files.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent. Strong customer service skills and a friendly, approachable demeanor. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and library software. Ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Interest in and knowledge of books, literature, and library services is a plus. Experience working in a library or similar customer service role is preferred but not required.
Position is part-time (20 hours/week). Work schedule will include some evenings and weekends. Please refer to the Core Competencies for Library Staff on the library’s website, www.wtcpl.org.
