Corrections Officer

Job description

Washington County Sheriff's Office is looking to hire a corrections officer. This is an entry-level position and is under general supervision. An employee in this position performs correctional work at a county detention facility, involving custody, escorting, rehabilitation of inmates and other related work as required. This employee may be assigned to work any shift.

Essential Functions

• Supervises inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation, work areas, and visitation.
• Inspects and patrols the grounds and facilities for contraband, unauthorized personnel and other security risks.
• Admits new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issues clothing and stores inmate’s personal property.
• Observes inmate behavior, counsels with inmates and family about problems, evaluates inmates on room and personal hygiene, attitudes towards employees and other inmates.
• Attends a variety of meetings such as staff meetings, training, etc.
• Prepares a variety of reports such as daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate records, and daily inmate counts.
• Operates and utilizes a variety of equipment including two-way radio, freeze gas, electronic gates, television monitors, computers, and may operate motor vehicles.
• Ensures the safety of residents through the supervision of their daily activity.
• Carries out existing policies and procedures.

Requirements

• Ability to read and interpret complex written materials such as: general orders, laws, publications, and training information.
• Ability to complete and evaluate completeness and accuracy of standard forms such as: incident reports, jail logs, booking information, etc.
• Ability to memorize physical descriptions, distinguishing characteristics, aliases of people, and objects presented in writing.
• Knowledge of basic English, grammar, spelling, and punctuation sufficient to accurately complete reports and take notes.
• Ability to arrange and communicate (orally and written) ideas and information in a clear and concise manner.
• Ability to apply general rules to specific problems or situations to arrive at a logical solution.
• Ability to deal calmly and rationally with irate or unreasonable individuals.
• Ability to establish priorities and make correct decisions based on available information.

Education Requirements

• Possess High School Degree or equivalent

Physical Demands

• Physical Force & Activity: Position requires the occasional use of muscle force to push, pull, lift, or carry a heavy object. Occasionally requires intense physical effort in performing series of tasks such as detaining a disruptive inmate. Requires movement of the body from place to place and sometimes requires overall body coordination. Requires ability to keep hands and arms steady while making movements. This position also requires risk of exposure to disease.
• Tactile & Sensory Coordination: Requires coordinated use of hands, fingers, and arms to grasp, move, or assemble objects. Task requires color, sound, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual perception and discrimination. It may also require oral communications ability.

Pay Scale, Work Hours and Benefits

Current Entry Level Rate of Pay: $22.31 per hour. Must be at least 19 years of age.

Work Hours: 12 hour shifts, 14 days in a 28 day cycle ending with seven days off in a row
