Fire Chief
Salary Range: $125,000 - $150,000 DOQ
The Hurricane Valley Fire Special Services District (HVFSSD) is a district fire department serving seven municipalities and unincorporated areas in beautiful Southern Utah, including Zions National Park, many sand dunes and water recreational areas, as well as mountainous terrain and an annual population growth between 3% and 5% per year.
HVFSSD is an ISO Class 2 department, consisting of 50 employees (administrative staff and field personnel), dedicated to protecting the lives and property through fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue services, and SWAT support; basic EMT through Paramedic services, including transport.
Job Summary: The Fire Chief is responsible for overseeing and directing all aspects of the fire department, including emergency response, fire prevention, and community education. The Fire Chief provides leadership and direction to a team of firefighters and ensures the department operates effectively, efficiently, and safely. The Fire Chief reports to the Board of Directors, presenting departmental needs, vision, budget, and implementation of the Board's directions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for fire department operations, including response to emergency situations, fire prevention programs, and community outreach efforts.
- Direct and coordinate the activities of firefighters, including training, staffing, and assigning tasks to ensure effective and efficient departmental operations.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with other emergency services, government agencies, and community organizations to enhance fire department operations and ensure a coordinated response to emergency situations.
- Develop and oversee the department's budget and ensure the efficient use of resources.
- Maintain and update departmental records, reports, and statistics, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Conduct investigations to determine the cause of fires and implement measures to prevent future incidents.
- Develop and implement public education programs to promote fire safety and prevention in the community.
- Participate in community events and meetings to represent the fire department and provide education and support to the public.
- Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures, as well as federal, state, and local regulations.
- Maintain a safe and healthy work environment for firefighters and other personnel.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in fire science, public administration, or a related field, preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in the fire service, including at least five years in a supervisory or managerial role, preferred.
- Completion of a state-approved fire academy or equivalent training.
- Knowledge of fire prevention and suppression techniques, emergency medical services, and hazardous materials response.
- Current EMT or AEMT required, paramedic experience preferred.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment and make quick, informed decisions.
- Ability to analyze complex problems and develop effective solutions.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
- Residency within the district is strongly preferred, within 3-months of hire.
Working Conditions: The Fire Chief will work in a variety of environments, including office settings, training facilities, and emergency response situations. The position may require working irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and responding to emergency situations on short notice. The job may also involve exposure to hazardous materials, extreme temperatures, and physical exertion.
