L&I's Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) administers the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) law by developing and enforcing rules that protect workers from hazardous job conditions. Our inspectors visit about 5,000 workplaces each year and cite businesses that violate health and safety rules.
Are you ready for new and exciting challenges? We are in need of a bilingual Spanish Compliance Industrial Safety & Health Investigator 3 (CISHI3) within our Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). In this role, you will perform complex workplace inspections and investigations in Agriculture for all types of occupational hazards to determine compliance with WISHA standards under WAC 296-307 , Agriculture. As a fully trained investigator, you will occasionally perform inspections in other industries as well as need arises.
CISHI3s are senior level safety and health investigators that conduct highly complex investigations and inspections of safety and health hazards in all industries independently or in teams. This includes fatalities or accident investigations resulting in hospitalizations, amputations, or loss of an eye.
CISHI3s lead CISHI1 and CISHI2 investigators and inspectors, or work as part of a team assisting and supporting CISHI5 supervisors and CISHI6 expert level industrial safety and health engineers in highly complex investigations and inspections.
All of this work is crucial to the safety and health of the workers of the State of Washington, and directly impacts and supports the Department’s mission, “Keep Washington Safe and Working”.
Due to the needs of this position, you must be physically capable to walk through a variety of workplaces such as agricultural fields and orchards walking through rough terrain. You will also inspect large processing facilities with metal stairways, catwalks, and ladders. Also you must be able to be exposed to all kinds of weather (wearing appropriate weather gear) for long durations.
In this position, you can expect to work 20% of the time in the office and the other 80% of your time in the field or teleworking to complete your inspection reports. The assigned duty station for this position is Kennewick, WA.

Some Of What You’ll Do
- Independently conduct thorough fatality investigations to determine root cause and other contributing factors.
- Independently investigate accidents resulting in hospitalizations, amputations, or loss of an eye.
- Investigate complaints, and referrals to determine if the alleged hazards exist and if employees are exposed to them.
- Conduct scheduled routine inspections.
- Organize, write, and edit comprehensive technical inspection and investigation reports which are the basis for safety and health compliance actions.

REQUIRED:
- Bilingual Spanish. Bilingual jobs include a 5% salary increase for dual language responsibilities.

- A valid and unrestricted driver license.
- Five years ’ experience as a DOSH Compliance Industrial Safety and Health Investigator (CISHI/CHSO), or equivalent experience as a Federal OSHA or other state plan journey-level safety and health specialist or industrial hygienist. OR
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP). OR
- Five years of full-time professional experience as an employer’s safety director or manager, industrial hygienist, safety and health specialist, etc. OR
- Seven years of full-time journey level occupational/industrial safety experience in one or more of the following industries: Government, military, construction, public health or related safety and health field. OR
- A Bachelor of Science degree from a regionally accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene or similar AND five years of occupational/industrial safety professional experience.
