Med/Surg Monitor Tech/Unit Clerk *Per Diem
*IMPORTANT NOTE: In lieu of benefits due to "per diem" status, 15% will be added to the hourly rate. Per diem employees are offered work on an "as-needed" basis.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is accountable to perform clerical duties, act as a unit receptionist, coordinate unit/patient activities with other departments via proper use of the computer and telephone, maintains an orderly and efficient nursing station. Provides, under the supervision of the RN, accurate recognition of cardiac rhythms by viewing the cardiac monitor, runs cardiac strips every four hours, measures PR, QRS, and QT intervals, identifies the rhythm, initials strip and mounts cardiac rhythm strip in the telemetry binder located at the nurses’ station upon patient discharge, strips to be transferred with patient chart.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
Certification Required:
- BLS for healthcare providers required.
Minimum Work Experience:
- Previous unit clerk and monitor tech experience necessary.
- Basic cardiac monitoring interpretation experience and/or proof of education.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology, proper grammar, and spelling.
- Computer literate.
- Professional customer service skills.
- Ability to read and communicate in English, bilingual abilities preferred.
POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Scope of Service
- Performs all responsibilities/ duties required by unit as defined in the scope of service, to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed. This includes, but is not limited to the age of the client served.
- Possesses the ability to differentiate between subtle ECG changes which signify benign problems or may signify a life threatening situation and reports this immediately to the RN.
- When ECG changes are noted, prints strip, notifies nurse and documents date, time and name of RN notified, and initials strip.
- Demonstrates general knowledge of the physiology of the heart.
- Demonstrates the ability to determine whether a rhythm change requires the immediate notification of the RN.
- Prints and interprets ECG telemetry strips throughout shift at defined time intervals and as need for changes in baseline.
Communication
- Daily communication with personnel from all departments for the purpose of scheduling diagnostic tests and treatments, ordering diets, and requisitioning medical supplies as needed. Must be familiar with standard operating procedures in ancillary departments to schedule diagnostic tests and treatments without conflict.
- Daily communication with physicians, nurses, visitors, and patients.
- Daily external communication with outside resources to help coordinate transition of care for patients.
- Assists with clerical needs as requested by physicians.
Documentation
- Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation to ensure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team to ensure quality care.
- Facilitates the proper documentation of the patient care system from pre-admission through discharge.
- Assures accurate patient location on EHR.
- Admit/discharge patients from EHR.
- Maintains Admit/Discharge Log.
- Updates Charge RN of patient census.
- Assists with patient equipment tracking, rental and order replacements as necessary.
- Tracks telemetry monitors at the change of shift and follows up on any missing devices.
