Under supervision, performs journey level mechanical work repairing and maintaining medium and heavy trucks and construction equipment; and performs related work as required. 

This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill a current full-time vacancy in the Community Services Department. This vacancy is located in Gerlach, NV.  Please only apply for this recruitment if you are available to work in Gerlach, NV on a full time and continuous basis. Gerlach positions are covered under the WCEA Non-Supervisory contract, per Article 35 - Assignment Differential/Incline Transportation Allowance, subsection Assignment Differential (lncline/Gerlach/Vya): WCEA Non-Supervisory Contract 2024-2028. This benefit currently includes an assignment differential of one hundred fifteen dollars and sixty-three cents ($115.63) biweekly for all employees assigned at Gerlach except as provided therein contract. Employees who are provided living facilities by the County or are otherwise receiving living assistance from the County are not eligible for the above provisions. Note: currently housing is not provided for incumbents assigned to work in Gerlach, NV.

Four years of full-time paid experience as a journey level mechanic specializing in heavy equipment, diesel engines and hydraulic systems; OR completion of a recognized apprenticeship program for repair of heavy equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 License Or Certificate

  • A valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • Basic mechanic's tools, including a tool box, customarily used to perform the duties of this position are required at the time of appointment.
  • A Hazmat Endorsement is required to run lube truck.

The Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) Non-Supervisory covers this position. 

Selected applicants will be required to submit to a urine drug test at the time they obtain learner’s permit for a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) or a CDL and they are required to operate vehicles requiring possession of a CDL. Employees with CDL’s in this class are subject to drug and alcohol testing according to applicable County policies.

Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). 

Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective January 1, 2025, the $39.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.

Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.

Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification.  Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.

2. If you have met the minimum requirements, and when a sufficient number of qualified candidates has applied, you will receive an additional email inviting you to schedule your Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic Performance Exam, followed by further communication regarding details of the examination.  

This exam is tentatively scheduled to be held on a date that will be determined when a sufficient number of qualified candidates have applied. Note: this recruitment is continuous/open until filled.
This exam will be administered and proctored in Reno, NV and you must be present to test. The exam dates will be determined at a later time when a sufficient number of qualified candidates have applied. 
The exam will be 100% a Performance Exam and will evaluate your expertise, knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:

  • Mechanical and Equipment Systems Knowledge
  • Diagnostic and Problem-Solving Skills
  • Safety and Compliance Skills
  • Communication (written and oral) / Customer Service Skills

Pursuant to the Washoe County Personnel Handbook, the Department of Human Resources does not administer an exam when there are less than 20 qualified candidates.  If there are less than 20 qualified candidates, the exam will be waived and all qualifying candidates will be placed on an unranked eligible list which will be referred to the hiring department. If the exam is scheduled to move forward and less than 20 candidates take the exam as determined by the Department of Human Resources, the exam will be waived. Only those candidates who took the exam or have a transfer score will be placed on an unranked eligible list which will be referred to the hiring department.

3. After the exam is completed, you will receive an additional email notifying you of the results. If you pass the examination, you will receive your score and rank. This rank will be used to determine which candidates will be interviewed by departments trying to fill a vacancy.

4. Hiring departments schedule interviews from a list of top scoring candidates. If your name is not sent to the hiring department, it will remain on the list for future opportunities as they become available.
