Under direct supervision of the Education Coordinator, the Education Lead is responsible for coordinating with parents, teachers, counselors, principals and other school district staff to assist Native American/Alaska Native students enrolled in the public school system or other approved alternative education program(s) in obtaining academic success; responsible for monthly reporting, supervision of Tutors, and Education Advisor I, Education Advisor II positions to ensure proper oversight and adherence to departmental policies and procedures;

responsible for providing educational opportunities to department staff in the area of education advisement, cultural awareness and data reporting procedures; fosters academic and developmental growth in Native American/Alaska Native students; responsible for oversight of academic programming for the Education Department and assists with implementation of curricula in after school and summer programs; maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field and one (1) year of supervisory

  • experience in education or human services field or equivalent combination of education and

  • experience.

  • Teaching credential with any endorsement (retired acceptable) or certification in school counseling or other human services related field required.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.

  • Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

  • Preference will be given to Qualified Native American Indians.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinates information and meetings between Education Department staff and senior leadership to ensure adherence to departmental policies and procedures, and school district policies and procedures to ensure optimal communication between all parties.

  • Assists students and families in academic achievement through multifaceted educational support including positive reinforcement, redirection and reward.

  • Assists students in achieving grade advancement through a day school program and will work with the student and family to develop an educational plan to ensure optimal growth in each developmental area.

  • Schedules monthly conferences with assigned staff during the school year with additional conferences scheduled as needed.

  • Maintains written, confidential records including staff feedback reports, student progress reports, reports of developmental deficiencies, attendance and academic standing.

  • Reports Native American/Alaska Native student lists to Education Coordinator.

  • Responsible for obtaining and tracking 506 Forms and enrollment documents from each Native American/Alaska Native student served.

  • Assists with student enrollment in after school programming to ensure that students and families are aware of options for completion of outstanding school work, credit recovery

  • (9-12th grade), testing and college planning.

  • Makes referrals to social services of children considered to be at a high risk due to an unsatisfactory home life or poor educational performance as a result of a serious problem.

  • Assists in coordination of educational workshops for department staff including Educational Advisement training, coordination of Cultural Awareness training and tracks required staff trainings to ensure adherence to departmental protocols and procedures.

  • Schedules and co-facilitates with department staff in the Student Assistance Program (SAP) groups for at-risk Native American/Alaska Native students.

  • Coordinates and assists in annual awards ceremony recognizing Native American/Alaska Native Students achievement in the assigned county (Alpine, Carson, and/or Douglas Counties)

  • Provides information to parents to ensure and maintain interest in the student’s academics.

  • Provides written monthly reports to Education Coordinator in a timely manner.

  • Leads educational committee meetings when required.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications
  • Current or Retired teaching certification required: Any endorsement, any U.S. state or territory (foreign certification or license is acceptable).

  • Knowledge of Washoe Tribe, culture and morals.

  • Knowledge of integrated functions of academic counseling and general student services.

  • Knowledge of a range of student life issues and concerns.

  • Knowledge of effective leadership skills and techniques

  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.

  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and basic arithmetic.

  • Ability to provide student career and/or academic guidance.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds, employees and officials.

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently under stressful conditions, make solid decisions, and exercise independent judgment.

  • Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports.

  • Ability to effectively maintain and respect all levels of confidentially relating to Native American/Alaska Native students and their records as it pertains to the Education Department, local school districts, the Washoe Communities and the Washoe Tribal staff.

  • Ability to be innovative, creative, and flexible.

  • Ability to analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction.

  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs.

  • Skill in planning and organizing activities.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Hiring preference is provided to members of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California followed by members of other federally recognized tribes. Must pass and comply with the PL101.630-Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Protection Act. Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California requires any designated candidate to complete a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening, must possess a valid NV or CA. driver license within thirty (30) days of employment, (when applicable) and PL 101-630 Criminal / Character Investigation background check.
