Prevention Education Specialist

This position is responsible for planning and implementation for Washoe and American Indian/Alaskan Native adults, children and adolescents and their families of education, prevention and intervention outreach programs and initiatives directed to address individual and family health, wellness, and health promotion and risk reduction associated with suicide, mental health, alcohol and other drug use. Maintains confidentiality for all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, social work, human services, or other health services and two years’ experience in suicide prevention, behavioral health services, or combination of education and experience or five years’ experience in suicide prevention, behavioral health services, or combination of education and experience.

  • Training in Prevention, Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, Historical Trauma, and Trauma Informed Care is a plus.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.

  • Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

  • Preference will be given to qualified Washoe Tribal Members and Native American/Alaska Natives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Engage in community outreach.

  • Identify community needs and develop plan for the education and prevention of suicide, substance misuse and dependency, and mental health.

  • Utilize cultural and evidenced-based education, prevention, early intervention and referral techniques to meet community needs.

  • Represent the Health Center in a positive manner with tribal members and professionals

  • Serve as a member on the Healing Center’s prevention teams.

  • Coordinate with other agencies and Washoe Tribal Departments to provide training and events that promote mental wellness and drug/alcohol free lifestyles.

  • Collect and compile data for the evaluation of prevention activities and outcomes.

  • Provide progress updates regarding community prevention activities and outcomes with Healing Center Prevention Team, parents, school and other involved agencies.

  • Seek further training and knowledge in behavioral healthcare to remain current with behavioral health standards of care.

  • Adheres to all healthcare standards as related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

  • Performs other duties as required for this position.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications
  • Knowledge of Washoe and American Indian/Alaska Native People and their history.

  • Knowledge of records management procedures and use of electronic health records.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and regulations including established professional standards.

  • Knowledge of medical and psychiatric rehabilitation terminology.

  • Knowledge of behavioral (psychological, emotional and social) needs.

  • Knowledge of community resources for behavioral health issues.

  • Ability to analyze problems, devise solutions, and make sound decisions.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative/effective work relationships with participants, partners, professionals and the public (especially with American Indian/Alaska Natives).

  • Ability to plan, organize, and express ideas clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner, building respect and confidence.

  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Skills in operating personal computer using a variety of computer software.

  • Skill in basic arithmetic.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to operate a motor vehicle, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Please note:

Hiring preference is provided to members of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California followed by members of other federally recognized tribes. Must pass and comply with the PL101.630-Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Protection Act. Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California requires any designated candidate to complete a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening, must possess a valid NV or CA. driver license within thirty (30) days of employment, (when applicable) and PL 101-630 Criminal / Character Investigation background check.
