PURPOSE:

Position: CTE Career Counselor

The CTE Career Counselor plays a vital role in supporting student success in both academic, interpersonal skills and career development. This position focuses on implementing district-approved curriculum and career readiness initiatives, which include but are not limited to High School & Beyond Plans (HSBPs), Dual Credit, Cascadia Technical Academy (CTA) program/student enrollment and Career-Related Learning Experiences (CRLEs), while helping students connect their interests and strengths to postsecondary pathways.

The counselor provides instruction, guidance, and support to ensure students are on track for graduation and well-prepared for life after high school. This includes maintaining accurate documentation of progress, addressing individual educational needs, and fostering a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver instruction and guidance on graduation requirements, HSBPs, CRLEs, dual credit opportunities, and other CTE programs such as Cascadia Technical Academy.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community and business partners to support student learning and career exploration.
  • Monitor student progress, especially for at-risk students, and provide appropriate interventions and support.
  • Plan and facilitate career and college readiness activities related to the high school and beyond plan, including interest, aptitude and skills assessments, job shadows/internships, work based learning, and CRLE documentation.
  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and administrators to ensure alignment with state graduation mandates and individual student goals.
  • Communicate regularly with students, families, and staff regarding student progress and planning.
  • Organize and support key career-focused events such as career and industry fairs, the WHS Grad Walk, FAFSA nights, and postsecondary planning events.
  • Maintain and report accurate student data in compliance with state and district guidelines.
  • Composes a wide variety of materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information (i.e 504 plans, CTA application/enrollment, etc) 
  • Develop professional relationships with business partners and attend district and regional meetings.
  • Organize and communicate post secondary scholarships.
  • Collaborate with Administration on all dual credit programming such as CTE Dual credit, Advanced Placement and college in the high school. 

Essential Functions

 

Instruction & Student Support

  • Deliver district-approved instructional goals at various grade levels, including citizenship, job readiness, and career exploration aligned with state law and district priorities.
  • Provide individual and group instruction to help students achieve their academic and career goals.
  • Identify student needs and collaborate with professional staff to support learning, behavior, and social-emotional development.
  • Develop and adapt instructional materials to meet a range of student abilities and needs.
  • Establish and maintain standards for student behavior and classroom engagement.
  • Promote a culturally responsive learning environment that values and reflects student diversity.
  • Participate in evaluation and professional growth processes with district administrators.
  • Reviews and approves all Parent/School Work Authorization forms.

 

High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) & SchooLinks Platform

  • Lead and support the annual development, implementation and revision of High School and Beyond Plans for students in grades 7–12.
  • Guide students through interest and career inventories, connecting results to academic pathways and postsecondary options.
  • Support the district’s implementation of the SchooLinks platform, including educator training, student onboarding, and alignment with SB 5243 requirements.
  • Collaborate with school and district staff to ensure consistency, equity, and alignment with the state's HSBP scope and sequence.

Career Pathways, Events, and Community Partnerships

  • Organize and implement career-related events, including WHS GradWalk, senior night, and career fairs at all secondary schools.
  • Coordinate and support Workbase Learning and Cascadia Technical Academy placements, including onboarding, monitoring student progress, and maintaining partnerships.
  • Serve as a point of contact and provide supplemental student support to school counselors as needed.

 

Program Coordination & Communication

  • Maintain accurate records, submit required reports (including 504 plans, enrollment applications, and onboarding forms), and support data reporting for career programs.
  • Provide regular updates, program information, and guidance to students, families, and staff on caseload.
  • Facilitate transition support throughout the K–12 system and into postsecondary pathways.
  • Participate in faculty committees, curriculum development efforts, and student activities as assigned.
  • Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities and perform other duties as assigned.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Collaboration & Coordination
    • Work closely with teachers, counselors, and community partners (e.g., service clubs, courts, child protective services) to share information and coordinate services that support student success.
    • Participate actively in regional, building- and district-level committees and school guidance teams.
    • Support middle-to-high school transition efforts by reviewing records and assisting with student placement and planning.
    • Work closely with college partners to facilitate dual credit processes and procedures

  • Program & Student Support
    • Research program eligibility requirements and maintain up-to-date knowledge to provide accurate advising on scholarships, financial aid, dual credit, and postsecondary options.
    • Provide consultative and referral services for students with suspected or identified disabilities to ensure access to appropriate supports.
    • Help plan and coordinate school-wide and individual student schedules to support instructional planning and student needs.
    • Collaborate with administration on advisory planning and activities.

  • Professionalism & Records
    • Maintain accurate, confidential student records in accordance with legal and district guidelines.
    • Report promptly to administration any serious student incidents, accidents, or concerns impacting safety or well-being.
    • Participate in district counseling initiatives and commit to ongoing professional development to strengthen knowledge, skills, and impact.
    • Build and maintain positive professional relationships. 

Job Requirements:  Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: controlling and motivating students; maintaining accurate records; and using pertinent software applications (Google Suite, Microsoft Suite, Qmlativ, SchooLinks, etc); adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform some math operations; read a variety of manuals, write documents created on own as well as following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems.  Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: knowledge of state and federal laws that govern school districts, age appropriate activities, stages of child development, and safety practices and procedures, including those surrounding student workers, therefore this position must hold or obtain a Washington State CTE Teacher certification and Worksite Learning Certification. 

 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment.  Flexibility is required to work independently or with others in a wide variety of circumstances; to work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and to operate equipment using defined methods.  Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; to work with similar types of data; and to utilize specific, job-related equipment.   Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.  Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant.  Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: fostering positive professional relationships (with individuals and businesses in and outside of the WSD); communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team; and working with frequent interruptions. This position requires the employee to transport students so annual van/transportation training is required.

 

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and operating within a defined budget.  Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions.  There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.   

 

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, and 40% standing.  The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.



Experience: Job related experience is desired.   Education: Master’s degree in job related area
