Summary
This position is responsible for document review of all incoming and outgoing licensed hazardous and non¬hazardous waste received by the facility to ensure compliance with DOT, IATA, and NRC requirements. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may receive occupational exposures to ionizing radiation that are As Low As is Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) and within regulatory limits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Daily review of all shipping paperwork to ensure compliance with DOT, IATA, and NRC requirements for safe transport of all waste in certified containers.
  • Ensures all documents are clear and concise for management of waste per technical and regulatory guidelines.
  • Acts as mediator and facilitator between customers and inventory shipments, including tracking, investigation, and resolution of waste shipment discrepancies.
  • Plans activities relating to the characterization and transportation of radioactive/mixed waste and hazardous/non-hazardous waste to and from the facility.
  • Conducts a daily review of all scheduled loads into and out of the facilities via highway and rail
  • Prepares all Bill of ladings (BOL) and reviews radiological survey information for proper shipping of empty containers, including physical inspection for compliance with DOT and TAC regulations
  • Conducts peer review of all shipping papers, facilitates labeling and inspection of incoming waste shipments.
  • Must be able to participate in and promote a safe and positive work environment in a team setting.
  • Create 540/541 manifests using LowTrack for inter-facility transfer and disposition.
  • Update site inventory tracking software for all inventoried wastes, as needed
  • Provides support for site operations departments pertaining to acceptance and disposition of inventoried waste per technical and regulatory guidance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience
BS preferred; but not required. Must have direct knowledge and experience with Hazardous and Low-Level radioactive waste including packaging, transportation, classification and management. Current Advanced Mixed Waste Shipper Certification OR Current Advanced Hazardous Waste and Advanced Radioactive Shipper Certification (if certification not current, must be able to obtain within reasonable time).

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating, and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully. An individual should have knowledge of Development software; Internet software; spreadsheet software and word processing software.

  • Demonstrated knowledge or ability in the following areas;
  • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Hazardous Waste Manifest System Department of Transportation (DOT) 49 CFR parts 171 through 180
  • Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Low-Level Radioactive Waste Manifest
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) a plus
  • Texas Administration Code (TAC) a plus; Understanding of Federal, State and Facility policies and regulations.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
