Primary Purpose

This position requires the ability to apply knowledge of Mental Health, Social and Emotional Learning, and state, local, and federal laws and regulations affecting the lives and education of students. The Coordinator of Mental Health and Counseling Services will work to implement systemic practices on PK-12 Waxahachie ISD campuses, including standards, curriculum, resources, professional development, and continuous improvement. The Coordinator of Mental Health and Counseling Services works closely with campus principals, and the Director of Educational Support & Counseling Services to ensure that all current and anticipated mental health and counseling programs are implemented to fidelity.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution
  • Valid Texas Educator certificate
  • Valid Texas counselor certificate preferred

Experience

  • Three years successful counseling experience

Special Knowledge And Skills

  • Provide coaching support for campuses to improve climate and culture.
  • Knowledge of comprehensive guidance programs, counseling procedures, intervention skills.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Educational Support & Counseling and district departments to develop and implement character education and positive behavior programming, specifying short and long-term goals, timelines and processes.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to campus and district staff in the area of research-based character education and positive behavior programming.
  • Develop and implement systemic, comprehensive behavior plans that will result in a reduction of problem behaviors, increase in positive student engagement, academic achievement, and attendance and graduation rate.
  • Collaborate with mental health programs throughout the district.
  • Serve as district crisis counselor.
  • Work with WISD Director of Security and campus administration to oversee tip411 alerts related to Counseling and Mental Health to ensure WISD policies are followed, and students are quickly referred to campus counselor for support.
  • Oversight of the MTSS behavior components for WISD.
  • Use standardized counseling skills and techniques to guide students in finding resolutions to challenges and/or to help them formulate coping skills.
  • Serves as expert resource to faculty, staff, and administration in areas of behavior intervention services, including mental health services.

Major Responsibilities And Duties

Instructional and Program Management

  • Assists to design, plan, and implement the districtwide character education and positive behavior program.
  • Plan with Waxahachie ISD and campus teams for implementation of the districts character education and positive behavior curriculum.
  • Observe and coach teachers on implementation and fidelity of the district’s character education and positive behavior programming.
  • Support the campus counselors with managing and implementing character education and positive behavior programming.
  • Collaborate with Next Step staff to implement Mental Health services on WISD campuses.
  • Oversee implementation of peer led suicide prevention program, Sources of Strength on WISD secondary campuses
  • Work with the WISD Technology team, and district and campus administrators to receive Blocksi alerts related to Mental Health – including self-harm and suicidal ideations, to ensure WISD policies are followed, and students are quickly referred to campus counselor for support.
  • Work with the campus principals to supervise the campus counseling programs including advice for aligning behavior and emotional health in the classroom.
  • Work with campus administrators to evaluate student data for the counseling department to support students in academic success, by addressing behavioral and emotional challenges that interfere with a positive school experience.
  • Support the campus counselor and administration in writing, presenting, evaluating, and modifying behavior modification/management plans by providing recommendations, information, and support with the involved teachers, administrators, parents, and students.

  • Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of comprehensive guidance programs, counseling procedures, intervention skills.
  • Knowledge of TEA/federal related rules, regulations and procedures.
