Primary Purpose
Direct and manage the overall program of instrumental music for the district. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements. Plan activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university Valid Texas teaching certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills
- Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
- Ability to manage budget and personnel
- Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band
- Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Experience
Three years teaching and band directing experienceMajor Responsibilities and Duties
Program Planning
- Direct high school instrumental performers, including marching band, orchestra, concert band, soloists, and ensembles.
- Manage all aspects of the district percussion program
- Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student s eligibility to participate in band.
- Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, and UIL activities.
- Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
- Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the band area.
- Support band booster club activities
- Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
- Recommend policies to improve program.
- Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of district’s curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
- Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.
- Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
- Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP)
- Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
- Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
Budget and Inventory
- Ensure that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.
- Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
- Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
- Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within department. Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all band equipment.
Instruction

- Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
Communication
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
- Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Professional Growth/Development/Other
- Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant band directors.
- Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
- Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
- Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents requires.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other administrators that are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position
