Equipment Mechanical Designer/Drafter

Description:
WCIS, LLC Mechanical Designers/Drafters create designs primarily for wood-handling equipment, devices and structures for the Sawmill Industry. Designers work with Engineers and other professionals to create or improve manufacturing systems and/or processes.
Mechanical designers typically work in an office setting, reviewing specifications and other data to develop mechanical drawings suitable for fabrication. Designers must have working knowledge of mechanical parts as well as AutoCAD 2020 design software.
Mechanical Designers may travel to job sites to measure physical dimensions for machinery and observe production lines. They also must be familiar with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices and procedures and be able to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
Requirements:
- 2 years of wood products equipment engineering design using 2D and 3D AutoCAD
- Mechanical design and manufacturing experience required. Preferably for wood products including sawmill, planer mill, plywood, and other wood products industries.
- Associate’s Degree including mechanical design principles, with additional minimum of two years’ experience designing for the wood-products industry.
- Experience with material properties of steel for design selection
- Technical writing and verbal skills
- People skills: Interaction with vendors, customers, manufacturing team, other designers
- Must be extremely detail oriented with strong communication skills.
- This position works closely with both sales and fabrication.
- Applicant must be able to produce, analyze, interpret, and review blueprints and other technical drawings.
- Troubleshooting problems with customer and manufacturing team to provide corrective actions
- Familiar with manufacturing processes: Welding, cutting, forming, milling, turning, etc.
- Effectively resolve conflicting priorities to achieve optimal results
- Proficient use of MS Office (Primarily Outlook, Word, and Excel)
- Self-Motivated, disciplined, passionate, and organized
Responsibilities:
- Develop wood products equipment designs to customer specifications in compliance with company standards, procedures, specifications, and codes.
- Must be able to create detailed bills of materials
- Transform initial rough product designs using computer aided design (CAD) into working documents.
- Must be able to perform these skills on AutoCAD mechanical design software. 3D Inventor a plus
- Responsible for quality of assigned tasks.
- Work with the production team during the manufacturing process
- Build relationships with vendors and customers
- Designs, calculations, models, drawings, BOMs, spare parts lists, etc.
- Project layout, engineering and detailed design, of various machinery products, assessment and monitoring of projects, and assisting production with technical issues.
Professional office environment: Involves up to 50 hours per week, 95% sitting and working at a computer/video display terminal, 5% travel to job sites. General working hours are 7:00am – 4:30pm Monday through Friday. These hours and days may change based on work load and special events/meetings
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; able to walking, standing, climbing, working outside and in noisy conditions long periods of time. Must be able to type on a keyboard.
