Job Summary
- Investigate the origin and circumstances of assigned fires and explosions and determine whether the event was the result of design, carelessness, or natural cause based on nationally recognized standards.
Major Duties
Investigate fire scenes, write detailed fire reports, and conserve evidence.Examines the physical attributes of a fire scene to identify and collect physical evidence from the scene.Assists in preparing a case to present to the district attorney or other proper authority where there is evidence of incendiary fire.Manages internal administrative processes.Interacts with courts.Engages in ongoing educational efforts.Assists current Fire Marshal with duties listed above.Participates in public service activities as necessary and public education duties.Performs any other duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must be proficient in the use of computers, office equipment, and Microsoft Software.Knowledge of firefighting practices, as well as fire prevention practices and techniques.Knowledge of fire laws, ordinances, rules and regulations, and criminal laws and procedures related to fire investigations.Skill in analytical problem-solving and written and verbal communication.Ability to maintain all certifications as required by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, Texas Department of Health, Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, and Fire Department policy.Ability to maintain flexible hours to meet job needs, including occasional evening or weekend work to include an on-call investigation rotation.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and the ability to work as part of a team.Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English language and orally in the Spanish language.Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in a course of study related to the occupational field or ten (10) years of related experience.Must have a current Firefighter, Fire Instructor, Inspector, and Investigator Certification issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP).Supplemental Information

The work consists of enforcing fire ordinances and regulations, assisting with fire-related investigations, and educating the public on fire safety practices.
