POSITION PURPOSE
As an NC Education Corps literacy tutor, you will work in person in an assigned placement school at least 3 days a week, with 1-3 students for 30 minutes at a time. You will support K-3 students with their foundational literacy skills, focusing primarily on phonological awareness and phonics instruction.
You will become an employee of the school district and will be paid hourly (pay rates vary by district). You do not have to have a background in education, because you will be supported by an NCEC learning coach who will provide training, professional development, and support throughout the school year.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma
- Desire to work with children and serve your community by extending the reach of teachers in your local school district
ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
- Knowledge of phonological awareness instruction includes:
- Awareness of words within a sentence
- Counting syllables in words
- Recognizing and producing rhyming words
- Alliteration activities
- Knowledge of awareness of individual sounds within words
- Segmenting, blending & manipulating sounds through isolating, deleting, and substituting
- Knowledge of phonics instruction deals with printed language and includes but is not limited to:
- Letter / Sound correspondence (identify and produce letters and their sounds)
- Deals with the letters and the various sounds represented by those letters. It is the strategy for sounding out words. The skill of decoding and blending words is necessary for fluent reading.
TRAINING PROVIDED:
All corps members (CMs) will participate in a maximum of 60 hours of professional learning and support during the 2022-2023 school year. Each CM will have an individualized professional learning pathway designed based on their particular needs. Pathways include asynchronous online training, coaching, office hours, and school-based observations.
NCEC will host a single-day, in-person Learning Summit in November and a virtual Learning Summit in the spring.
All professional learning and support are paid by your PSU and the recording and sharing of those hours are managed by NCEC.
