Weld County Sheriff's Office is seeking an Animal Control Officer. Animal/Code Enforcement Officer is an entry level position that enforces Weld County Ordinances pertaining to failure to control animals, littering, and excessive noise. Officers respond to animal, littering, noise and dumping complaints; capture and transport animals; search through debris for evidence; investigate ordinance violations; issue citations for animal, noise, and littering violations; document facts in writing; provide court testimony; work closely with other officers, the public, the Humane Society, and the Office of Emergency management.
10 hour shifts generally 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
$24.18 - $30.63 per hour plus benefits (see benefits tab).
As an applicant for this position, you should be aware of Senate Bill 19-085, the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. The act requires employers to announce the pay range for job openings. This range encompasses the nine pay steps available should you receive the position and demonstrate satisfactory performance over time.
This position is non-exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following job duties are established to outline the basic duties and responsibilities of the above captioned position. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Respond to and investigate citizen calls for service, daily, to provide public service and to enforce animal, noise, and littering related ordinances, and state laws and regulations in a fair, impartial, and legally defensible manner to maintain public safety.
- Safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Handle and/or transport domestic, and sometimes vicious, animals; primarily canines, but frequently includes felines, livestock, and wild animals.
- Operate a tranquilizing dart gun to control wild, vicious, or otherwise uncontrollable animals.
- Operate catch poles and animal traps.
- Exercise independent judgment and discretion within legal and departmental guidelines to achieve desired results.
- Write reports and provide necessary information to successfully prosecute animal, noise and littering ordinance violations.
- Converse Communicate with and listen to victims, citizens, witnesses, and others to obtain accurate objective information to successfully disposition citizen calls for service.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written English, and to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, procedure, and operating manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to operate telephones; computer terminal, keyboard, photocopier, and scanning instrumentation; tranquilizer gun; two-way radios; and job-related equipment, such as animal traps and catch poles.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in a position requiring frequent public contact.
- Experience in working with domestic and wild animals.
- Experience in working with environmental situations.

Tattoos:
1. Tattoos may be displayed while on duty or representing the agency unless considered controversial, disrespectful, or offensive.
2. Tattoos, scarifications, and brandings on the face, or front of the neck, are not authorized while on duty or representing the agency.
- Modest hand tattoos are allowed, at the discretion of the Sheriff or designee.
- Modest neck tattoos not extending onto the front of the neck, beyond the carotid arteries, are allowed at the discretion of the Sheriff or designee.
Piercings:
1. Modest piercing are allowed.
2. Nostril is okay; septum, bridge, nasal Lang & rhino piercings are not allowed.
3. No more than one piercing is allowed to be displayed.
- Unusually large or obtrusive piercings are not allowed.
- Ring thickness of 18 gauge (1mm) or smaller and a ring diameter of 10mm or smaller is allowed.
- A stud size of 2mm or smaller is allowed.
3. Ear piercings
- Sworn personnel, only females are allowed to wear one pair of post style earrings, one in each lobe, while on duty.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Color vision essential to distinguish description of vehicles, suspects, victims and other relevant objects. Visual skills enabling use of firearm, office and field equipment.
Olfactory sensory capabilities to detect criminal/hazardous situations.
Dual hearing is required. Employees are required to listen to multiple audio inputs simultaneously, such as portable radio conversations, conversations, sounds related to criminal or suspicious activity, alarms, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is normally performed outside the office in all areas of Weld County with infrequent supervision and/or assistance; the primary work environment is in the rural areas of the county. There is daily contact with persons from a wide range of backgrounds in a variety of circumstances; some contacts may be hostile. Code enforcement duties may require searching for evidence that may be unappealing and may have unexpected hazards involved. Occasionally, the environments consist of uneven ground, high or precarious places, unlighted areas, or contain potentially dangerous conditions or items. Inclement weather conditions are frequently encountered, and an employee is required to drive, handle calls for service, and move between their vehicle and buildings. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
